Ray, he is also on the 1892 State Census and the 1910 in Kortright -
birthdates vary. The painting made me think of the Hudson River
School/style of painting landscapes, but I looked all over the 'known'
painters who followed this style and he is not there.
Hope you are able to solve this mystery.

Late update - I've found a Jack Elliott in the Town of Kortright in the
1900 census, born May 1850 (though it does give his age as 46, making a
birth year more like 1854). His occupation is listed as artist. The
other glitch is the year of emigration is given as 1890, two years
before the paintings - but given that the birth year is messed up, the
year of emigration could be off too.

Ray - you certainly take on some difficult tasks. John Elliot

I have copied David Knapp, (Elliot descendent) on this to see if Ina
Thomson means anything to him or he has any knowledge of John/Jack's

Subject: [NYDELAWA] Jack Elliott
I'm trying to find out about a person named Jack Elliott. I know little
about him other than that in 1888 he painted two views of Bovina. The
paintings can be seen on my Bovina NY History blog at
And note that the information in the blog about the artist is totally
wrong and I'm trying to fix this. One of the paintings had been given
to the Bovina Historical Society by Ina Thomson. For some reason, I got
the impression that her father, James Thomson, was the artist, but I've
now determined that this is not the case (mea culpa). So, any ideas on
who Jack Elliott was would be appreciated. Thanks.
