Getting NYS vital records can be a sticky wicket. If you're not a direct descendant
with proof of death for the person you want the documents for, it's tough.
Upstate Genealogy Blog ("Upstate" is New York-ese for any place that's not
NYC) has a lot of information on obtaining NYS vital records. Read all applicable posts
- look at the right-hand column for "NYS Vital Records
in addition ---
- "Another Area in Upstate New York Now Has the NYS Vital Records Index"
- "Good News: The NYS Vital Rcords Index is Coming Online!"
- NYS Department of Health: "Birth, Death,
Marriage & Divorce Records".
Note that according to other family searchers I know, currently the waiting period for
genealogy-level vital records requests is about 8-10 MONTHS. It may cost more, but it
would be much quicker to order certified copies instead of the genealogy copies.
- New York City Municipal
Archives: "The Vital Records Collection at the Municipal Archives".
NYC vital records are not available through the NYS DOH, but through NYC itself. I once
ordered a marriage certificate about six years ago. It was supposed to take about six
weeks, but came in only three weeks. I don't know about current waiting periods.
