Subject: [NYDELAWA] HOTCHKISS
I am a descendant of Laura Ann HOTCHKISS, daughter of Augustus and Anna HOTCHKISS. I’m
trying to find the father of Augustus HOTCHKISS (c1797-c1865); I’m hoping to find a male
descendant who has done a DNA test.
There is conflicting birth data for Augustus, the 1850 indicates that he was born c1797 in
Connecticut and the 1860 census indicates that he was born in c1800 in New York. He is
not found in the 1870 census, he had probably died. In the 1855 New York State census,
Augustus and wife Anna are living with son Thomas and are listed as “father” and “mother”.
I believe he was born in Connecticut as almost all Hotchkiss’ were born in Connecticut
during the late 1700’s; my theory is that he was the son of a first marriage and his
mother died, perhaps in child birth. He married Anna (I believe Anna Tyler) and had 4
children I know of: a child who died in infancy (1818); a daughter, Laura Ann Hotchkiss (b
1819); a son Thomas Hotchkiss (b 1824); and a second son, John Hotchkiss, (b 1825).
Augustus is also found in Waterville (now Hobart) in 1818; in the 1830 census in Delhi and
in the 1840 census in Hamden.
Augustus’s son Thomas had several sons who had several male descendants, who also had male
descendants – hopefully some alive today. Augustus’s son John had male descendants, but
I’m not sure if any of his sons had male descendants who would be alive today.
Any help with this HOTCHKISS line will be appreciated. If you know of a male descendant,
please help me get in contact with them.
Laura Ann HOTCHKISS married Charles C FISH, grandson of Daniel FISH; Daniel came to
Delaware County between 1800 and 1810 from Somers, Tolland County, CT.
