Charlotte Sheldon wrote recently about our meeting
in California. Serendipity played a big part in it!
Back in October, Charlotte was in Delhi doing some
research at the Historical Society. The family line she
was researching was EVERETT, and when she came
across folders bearing that name she copied everything
Fortunately for me, there was material on ROGERS, one
of my family lines. She very kindly sent copies to me by
mail (I had posted an inquiry about Rufus Rogers on this
site), and I was astounded to see that a 1921 letter was
from my grandmother, Bertha Wheat WHITNEY. She
was researching our ancestor, Rufus Rogers, back then.
The amazing thing is that had it not been for Charlotte
Sheldon happening upon that folder, our family would
never know there was relevant material in a folder
I called Charlotte when I received the material, and
discovered that she lived in Newbury Park, Calif. I said
I was going to Oxnard to visit my brother (John Whitney,
who has posted numerous items on the Delaware County
site) in late February and that perhaps we could get
And that we did--halfway between each place--in Camarillo.
We enjoyed lunch and a wonderful conversation about
Delaware County and the joy of serendipity in family history
searches. You never know what you might uncover!
