I think the main "industry" in Ontario/Mendon Co in 1806 and following was an
influx of people looking for good farmland - many of them from NJ!
I think the route they took from NJ was up the Hudson River to near Albany, where they
portaged to the Mohawk River, taking it until it was too small, then either found another
tributary that was large enough, or portaged to Lake Erie, then took a boat to Rochester,
BTW, in Mendon we are talking about Catherine (not her mother) and Catherine Rall was born
in NY - along the Delaware River in the Town of DELHI, according to her youngest son,
writing in his Diary in 1880 . I believe Catherine's father was a farmer. Sometime
after Catherine's birth, perhaps even after arriving near Lima, NY, Catherine's
father died in a farming accident. I don't think that fact was reported in any of the
newspapers then, but I am not sure.
Catherine's Mother, Rebeckah (Gregory) Rall, was born in Norwalk, CT in 1763, a
daughter of Denton and Margaret (Sherwood) Gregory.
One other mystery connected to the Sanford family: The 1880 Diary also reported the
death of William Sanford on 1 Nov 1859, that he died intestate, and his court file was
quite large. I have searched Surrogate Court Records for Mendon & Ontario, Ulster,
Otsego, Delaware, & Yates Counties, and have not found that information. I keep
