Hmmm I hate to say it but sometimes some researchers will find files they want and just
One example that makes my teeth itch, I'd found an abstract of a will but some of the
wording wasn't clear so I paid a researcher to look for it: nothing there. Sometime
later I was whining and this guy wrote me all the details but noooo he won't admit
having taken it.
A cousin and I went researching in NY and went through some stuff in Tioga Co NY
courthouse back room scrap by scrap one day and actually found all the correspondence and
lists of our ancestor who died intestate in what had become Chemung County out of Tioga 13
years prior his death, that answered almost everything we didn't know except where
he's buried, and told us more than we'd ever suspected! We put all the *organized*
bits and pieces back after copying them. Why in Tioga we have no idea.
So you think yours went upriver then across and east, north of the finger lakes? Kinda
like where the canal would be built later? If so they'd likely have used a sleigh in
That other way I know about that some others went about that same time would have gone
north out of Elmira and Horseheads up pretty much what's 14 now, I think. That road
had been developed before or during the Revolution, General John Sullivan's expedition
burning out troublesome natives.
