Delaware Co. was named for the Delaware ( Lenni-Lenape ) Native Americans
in the area.
In fact, the colony, county, river, tribe, language, bay and subsequently the state were
named for Thomas West, 3rd Baron De La Warr, of Wherwell Abbey in Hampshire. All but the
already had perfectly good Algonquin or Lenni-Lanape names.
