Dear Delaware Listers - Last Thursday, Jan. 20th, my last surviving uncle,
DR. Walter E. EELLS, died at the age of 97 in Walton, NY. Known
affectionately to my generation of nieces and nephews as "Uncle Doc", he
practised family medicine in Walton, (where he and my mother were born and
raised) from 1930 til his retirement in 1990. He could proudly tell you the
number of babies he had delivered, and oh, the stories he could tell of house
calls made in those early days with emergency surgeries done in farmhouse
kitchens by kerosene lantern! He delivered me in 1931, took out my tonsils in
about 1936, and I was thrilled to serve as his scrub nurse once the year I
graduated from nursing school in 1952.
Uncle Doc was also a walking encyclopedia of the Eells family history and I
credit him with my present interest in genealogy.
My purpose in writing the List is two-fold. Sadly, due to the bad weather
this last week both in VA where I live, and all of the East coast, I was
unable to attend his funeral. I wonder if any of the listers who live in
Delaware County would be kind enough to send me any obituaries or other
writeups that are in the local papers. I know the Walton paper is only
weekly, but feel sure there would be notices in Binghamton, Sidney and
Oneonta. He was well known for his community involvement as well as his
medical career. If any of you can oblige, please contact me off list and I
will provide my address.
My other request is if any of you have recollections of "Uncle Doc" you would
care to share, I would love to hear from you!. I visited Walton often as a
child and less often as an adult, but it always seemed to me that half the
town knew and greeted him.
Thanks in advance.
