This cemetery which wasthe subject of discussion here a week or two ago,
is indeed just where the online map says it should be, north of Rt 23 east
It's a large and well-kept cemetery, with well over a hundred markers,
and a sign on the front gate says it is "Harpersfield Rural Cemetery --
Stevens Cemetery", "Endowed with perpetual care in loving memory of Lydia
Wilcox Jones, daughter of Moses Swift Wilcox and Lydia Gaylord Beard Wilcox,
and Wife of Herschel V. Jones"
Two remarkable stones read, "In memory of Mr. James Hendry who was
killed by Indians and Tories April 18th 1780 in the 35th year of his age",
and "?? memory of ?? and John Hendry who were(?) sacrificed(?) by the Tory
.. ? .. April 1780 for the Crime Cald Democracy".
Other names which I saw in a few minutes' tour, not enough time to copy
inscriptions -- most appeared multiple times, most are mid-to-late 19th
century but a few are later or earlier. I'm sure this is not complete:
Anyone thinking of visiting, be aware if it would concern you that
there's a closed gate at the entrance, and I didn't see any names or phone
numbers to call for permission to enter.
