Our Mary wasn't born until 1863, but I am glad to learn about FCS/DLI. We had visited
the Del. Cty. Hist. Assn. last summer, but had our sights set on Stephen B. and James G.
Rogers (grandfather and father respectively of Mary). We didn't find anything on them,
but this year, we will definitely see if they have anything on Mary.
Though, if you have time to spare and want to see if a Mary in our time frame is listed,
that would be a great help. I am thinking she must have studied, since she was a
teacher-right? (One would think. :-) And I wonder if any special courses were required for
teaching back then and if so, where would she have taken them. (Have to look into that.)
I haven't come across a John in our line, yet, but I will be sure to let you know if I
do. We are stuck with Stephen B. Rogers, so if you ever come across one of those, please
let me know. What we have on him:
From census records:
He was born ca. 1794, probably in MA (on later censuses, his adult children list him as
born there, however, on one child's death cert. it says he was born in CT. Regardless,
who knows who provided that d.c. info., so I am thinking the census is probably more
In 1820 Census he lived in Tompkins.
From the "Benedicts in America" and a genealogy book of the
St. John family: In 1822 he married Mary Seely BENEDICT
In 1827 he bought land in Franklin.
In Feb. 1830 he sold it.
In 1830 Census he lived in Franklin.
From Insolvencies (listed on Del. GenWeb site):
In Dec. 1830 he is insolvent.
He does not figure in the 1840 Census (in NY anyway) and by figuring out the enumeration
of people living with his father-in-law, James BENEDICT, we believe that Mary and her
children are living with him.
So, we don't know if he flew the coop, died, or what?
Thanks for your input.
