I do hope the following is not too long, if so please advise, thank you.
I am long in the background of the list, however I check for
information that is going back and forth. It is about time I became
involved in asking for help and assistance and these things go both
ways In doing so I may be of help to someone else. I hope this is not
Myers: My brick wall: I am very sure that my wife's 3rd G. Grandfather
JOHN MYERS was born September 4 1897 in Delaware County, New York
State, possibly in the area of Middletown. In 1824 he went to Ontario
Canada and was employed in the construction of the Welland Canal. He
stayed and married CORDELIA HAVENS and set up farming in Norfolk
County in Ontario.
John Myers was still living for the first 5 years of a great
grandson's who many years later wrote a detailed description of John
Myers, his descendants and particulars of John's history including
1)John was one of a family of 17 children.
2) He was born in New York State U.S.A.
3)"They were always spoken of as Dutch".
4)He understood that the first of the family came as a soldier and never returned to his
5)He noted that he thought the old family farm was about 30 miles from Town of Catskill.
6)*i The farm was on the east fork of the Allegheny river.
7)He had a sister ELIZABETH born about 1796 in Delaware County married a JEREMIAH VAN
WAGONER of the same area. They
moved to Elgin County, Ontario which is next to Norfolk County.
8) They spoke of a relative a Judge in Appleton U.S.A. There was a Judge GEORGE HENRY
MYERS in Appleton and research determined
that he very well was the son of a brother of John SAMUEL MYERS who was born in Middletown
Delaware in 1801.
9)***He made a trip to New Jersey (date unknown) to get a orphaned nephew LEWIS VAN
WAGONER.He was 10 in the 1810 Ontario Census.
*i6)It could not have been the Allegheny river which is on the west side of New York
and no where near Catskill. The Delaware River is the only one that makes any sense.
**8)John's eldest son was named WILLIAM HENRY MYERS.
***9)This nephew was raised to adulthood by John and later joined the 3rd N.Y Cavalry
(civil war) declaring he was born in Delaware County N.Y.
consequently I would suggest that another sister of John's married a Van Wagner as
I live in a community outside Edmonton Alberta Canada and it is not very convenient for me
to go to New York State
to personally do research. I would appreciate ANY comments anyone may have.
