I am new to the list and am most interested in learning more about my great
great grandfather George Decker.
George Decker Sr. was born in Copake, Columbia County, NY in 1814 and died
in Scranton, PA in 1898. He was a blacksmith and used to shoe ponies that
Indians brought to him. He also used to shoe horses for the stage coaches.
The stage coach route went right along Main Avenue in Scranton. A street
in Scranton is named after this family. In the late 1800s to early 1900s,
it was called Decker Alley now it is known as Decker Court. They lived
right on the corner of Lafayette and Decker Alley. I believe this is where
the blacksmith shop was. It was called George Decker and Son.
His wife, Catherine, maiden name not known, was born in Dutchess County, NY
in 1817, probably June 4 or 5. She died in Scranton on July 28, 1891.
George and Catherine had several children. Catherine Decker was the oldest
of 18 children. She was born September 24, 1835 in Mayfield, PA. On April
1, 1839 the family moved to Hyde Park, PA, which later became part of
Scranton. The other known children¹s names are Martin, Mary, Eliza, Clara,
George Jr., Edward, William, Harriet, Addie and Ella. George Jr. was known
as ³Bub². Ella was married twice, first to ? Tigue and then to ? Engler.
Martin was married to Frances and was called ³Aunt Frank². They had a son
Is anyone connected to this family? I would like to find George and his wife
Catherine on a census somewhere, where I can learn all 18 of the children's
names. To find George's family, when he was a child in Columbia County,
would be a missing addition to my ancestry. Is there a census available
for around 1815 or1820 for Columbia County?
Any help would be appreciated.
Thank you, Carolyn Jones
