Thank you for your wonderful offer.
I have two brick walls that have stumped me for over a decade.
I would like to know who the parents are of my 3rd great grandfather, Frederic(k) Rote.
What I know: He was born 20 June 1793 in Livingston, Columbia County NY
He was married to Elizabeth Smith dau. of Henrich and Catharina Smith, who was also
born in Livingston, 12 Sept 1800. Christened 12 Oct 1800, St John's Lutheran,
Their first child was born 1817 (Leonard). The first 5 of 12 children were christened
at Dutch Reformed Church of Linlithgo in Livingston.
1850 Census and 1855 NYS Census places he and the family lived in Claverack.
On 12 Jan 1860, the Hudson Weekly Star reported that there was a Petitioner's
Commission to determine Frederick Rote's sanity. He may have gone to an
I can't find anything after that in Census records.
He died 23 Apr 1871 unknown location. He is buried in Willow Glen Cemetery, Dryden,
Tompkins Co NY as his name is on the same monument as his daughter Lany Rote Sheldon and
her husband Edward H Sheldon.
If I could get back another generation, that would be great!
2nd brick wall: I would like to know where my 2nd great grandfather died. Peter Rote, son
of Frederick and Elizabeth (Betsy) Rote was born in Livingston, 14 July 1826.
His brother Leonard had moved to Sheffield, Berkshire Co, Mass and
Peter also was living there in 1850 and married Elizabeth Baldwin (b 1833) in 1855.
He was a farmer and in 1860 Census, he and his family are in
Salisbury, Ct. Close to the Mass.border
1863, he is registered in Sheffield, Mass for the Civil War.
1865, he and family are in Newfield, Tompkins County, NY
I don't know where he died. Supposedly, both he and wife Elizabeth died the same
year (1874?) and children were separated and went to live with other families in Tompkins
Thank you! Karen Rote McEvoy

Subject: [NYCOLUMB] Vital Record Lookups
I own 27 books of vital records for nine counties in Eastern New York
State. I just made a webpage describing the contents of each in order
to assist one particular person. While my books are out, I would be
happy to do limited baptism, marriage and death lookups in them. For
each of you I would do just one request for up to five lookups.
That could be one person in five books, five persons in one book each,
or any combination that adds up to five or fewer.
The offer is good for 12 days. It expires at the end of the day on
Thursday August 15.
To see a list of the books and what records they contain, visit the
If you know a person's middle name, include it. I'll look under both
names as a single lookup.
Many persons have had the same or similar names over the years. If you
know when the person was born or died, let me know so that I don't spend
time reporting impossible records to you.
