I'm not aware of any 1700's church records for Canaan that still exist. That area
was settled by New Englanders who didn't attend the Reformed or Lutheran churches
closer to the river.
Asa Douglass married 2nd wife Sarah Wyncoop 25 Aug 1801 at Albany Reformed Church,
probably in deference to her Dutch heritage.
A John Douglas & Engeltje Van Valkenburg baptized 3 children at Kinderhook Reformed
Church 1790-96. I don't know if he's related to the Canaan Douglass clan.
The earliest Columbia County deeds for Douglass are 1818, 1825 and two from 1829. In
1818, John Douglass of Canaan purchased 30 acres there from Anson Hunt of Victory, Ontario
Co., NY for $450. In 1825 Jonathan H. Douglass bought land from Moses Rathbun, and in 1829
Asa Douglass sold land separately to Robbins W. Douglass and Charles Douglass, all of
Canaan. There may be earlier deeds filed in Albany.
