Thanks for the advice on Fulton. I will work on it this afternoon. Herbert was actually
Herbert S Taylor. I found the middle initial on the 1855 census. Thanks to you I now
know there are sometimes census records in the middle of decades. I found a single 20
year old Herbert Taylor born in New York on the 1870 Allegany County census which is two
counties over from Tioga. He was working as a farm hand and it could be him. I then
found a Herbert Taylor living in Michigan single at 30 on the 1880 census born in New
York. There were then two Herbert S Taylors propagating in Michigan by 1900, one of them
born in New York. It is so tempting to pursue these, but at present no way to connect
them to my Herbert. If only his name had been Ebenezer!
