There are a few sources for the church records of Columbia County. You can buy the Kelly
books from his company Kinship at kinshipny.com
Transcriptions by the Holland Society for many of the Reformed churches and a few Lutheran
are on Ancestry.com
Many of the records without notes and sponsors are online on FamilySearch.org
useful to search them by batch # using names or dates -
There were other transcriptions of various churches published over the years, and many of
the books can be found at good libraries. Be aware that the records of most families were
recorded at different churches - even the baptisms of siblings can be in 3 or 4 books
although they didn't necessarily move anywhere.
Susan's right that names were not changed consciously; the pronunciation evolved over
the decades as different languages were used, and the spellings were just the way the
person writing heard the name. Most folks in the early days wouldn't have been able
to spell their names at all. Bechtel to Pickel isn't as big a change as it seems.
