I'm still tinkering with the Smiths and Snyders from time to time, but haven't had
much time, unfortunately. I did do a lot of searching last year or the year before using
Heritage online. Gertrude Barber did a heroic job years ago copying death records from
various NY towns, I also found there her transcription of Will Probates from Columbia
County, which with the census records begins to make some sense. They are great, because
often they will name the children in the probate. But it's slow, painful work trying
to make connections. I'd love to get back to Philmont to continue going through their
old registers of births, marriages and deaths. Never had time for all.
One hint from Bill Dollarhide at our last year's Jamboree (SoCal Genealogy Society)
was to check the original census the state took (the Federal, not what I call the
"Tweeny" or State ones). The state usually kept the original and sent a COPY to
DC, so often there are mistakes in those from the Nat'l Archives. Hah. Wish I had time
to follow up on some of them. Cheers! Jean
