Thank you very much for taking the time to reply to my query. I should have mentioned that
Joseph married an Irish woman named Jane, a.k.a. "Jennie", (the story is they
ran off together to America because their families had disowned them for marrying) and
that after having their three children in Utah, they traveled by covered wagon to Montana
in 1878. It was there they remained until they died. Unfortunately, the Joseph Dyer you
found is not mine. However, the site you mention seems rather useful. Perhaps I will find
something there. =)
Now, there is one thing I am confused about, and perhaps you would be able to help out,
since you seem to know some good Utah sources of information. You see, since Joseph and
Jane Dyer had come to America together, I would think that the two would be immediately
married and living together. Yet instead, on the 1870 Census, Joseph is living with
another man older than he, also a confectioner. It seems that he may have been apprenticed
for a time. Or, perhaps, they met on ship on the way. I know without a doubt this is my
Joseph Dyer. What I don't understand is why he is "single". Where did Jane
go? They are, of course, found together in Montana in 1880. I'd check the 1990 census
for a marriage year, but he died by then.
Joseph T. Dyer was born about 1830. Jane/Jennie was born between 1841 and 1844. I do not
know for certain when they moved to America. According to the 1900 census, Jane arrived in
America in 1845, which -also- does not fit the family story. (I'm getting more
confused, the more information I find.) But I don't doubt the family story one bit. If
you can find -any- clues at all, I would be very grateful.
