Ok! Here is what I have have found for a death date on George D. Coburn. According to
the cards for the digital newspapers at the Public Library in Ely his death was 8/29/1891
on pg 2 column 3 in the White Pine News Newspaper. Or you can go to ancestry and go to the
Stories & Publications, choose the NV and put 1891-1891 for the dates with his name.I
used to have them but I'm not sure where I put them. Anyway there is one in the Weekly
Gazette Stockman 9/3/1891 & I believe one in the Reno Evening Gazette 9/2/1891. If I
had ancestry I would give you the obit info.
My great grandpa wrote a Journal about all the happenings in Snake Valley. This particular
story was written about George Coburn and about him working at the Lehman Caves in Baker,
NV.
This is what was wrote abt him "Coburn was a miner and had some knowledge of
carpenter work. As he progressed w/ the trail work the stairs were built and installed.
Coburn was a man of med. height & weighed abt 180lbs. and 5ft 10in tall. A very
peculiar thing as is told, he had a very long beard which was to his knees when brushed to
full length. When at work the beard was brushed and then rolled and pinned with safety
pins under his chin just abt his shirt collar or folded and placed in the front of his
shirt. He was very proud of his beard as was told to me."
According to the journal after a # of yrs, he became ill from a kidney ailment which
aftwerwards took his life, which still living at the cave in 1895(his was confused on the
date). He was buried south and over the first hill from the cave. There was markers at the
foot and head of the grave. I hope this info helps!
