I search a bunch of different database systems and found basically nothing on this person.
Having the name of the husband's grandmother might have helped in finding him in a
family tree. Having his date of birth would have helped, as there are a number of Michael
O'Mahoney.
--The 1920 Census of Packard, Pershing Co, NV
Michael J. O'Mahoney, age 50 born in IL to both parents born in Ireland, a partner in
a mining operation. But, I don't know if this is or is not the correct person.
"reportedly died about 1929" You didn't identify where the
"reportedly" was from, records, family lore? Do you know he died IN Nevada?
Findagrave.com does have a Michael J. O'Mahoney that died in Cody ,Wyoming; but, has
no birth or death dates. Cody is a nice little tourist stop, especially for those also
visiting Yellowstone. This very well could be a wild goose.
If he worked for the State Hospital, he would have been a State employee. There may be
some record of his employment. If he died while an employee, etc.

They should know where potential employee archives are stored.
Was he married or have any property? Property records, recorded deeds, death
certificates, probate records could be found at the County Recorder's office.

If he was not married, there could be a probate case.

This identifies microfilm records that might have his information:

You would need to attempt to have the roll #1 sent to your local library via the
Interlibrary loan system. Or see if there is a volunteer at the Nevada State Library...or
if the Nevada State Library does research services.

Birth and death records from 1887 to the present are recorded in each county, either in
the office of the County Recorder or County Health Officer. The Nevada State Office of
Vital Statistics has birth and death records from 1911 to the present for all counties.
