Nevada Place Names by Helen S. Carlson Page 119
Gerlach [Washoe]
A Nevada post office, established October 27, 1909, and township on the main line of the
WP RR and on State Route 34, between the Black Rock and Smoke Creek deserts. Emigrants
taking "the Noble Road left the Applegate-Lassen Trail at Black Rock Springs, went
past this site, and southwestward through Smoke Creek Desert toward Susanville" The
town was settled in 1906 and named for the Gerlach Land and Cattle Company on the nearby
Gerlach and Waltz Ranch. The firm was founded before the turn of the century by Louis
Gerlach.
Hope this information helps.
