Malinda is with her son, Cady, for the 1930 and 1940.
The death records for daughter Margie Ella, son Zina and and daughter Hattie have her
surname Ely. The death record for son Anthony McCullough says it was Ellie. Her death
record has it Ealy, that she was born in Wayne county and lived there 94 years. I
can't find anyone who fits in Wayne County in 1850 or 1860.

William Cady Payne and Malinda Ealy had the following children:
i. Margie Ella Payne 11,17,20 was born on 18 Apr 1869 in Wayne County, West Virginia.
She appeared in the census in 1880 in C eredo Dist, Wayne, West Virginia. She died on 12
Jul 1926 in Shoals, Wayne, West Virginia.
I suspect Margie was named after her grandmother, whose name sounded like
"Marjorie Anne", although they spell it a dozen different ways.
She marries Osman Carroll in Wayne County and dies in Wayne County 38 years later. I
hope that at least once they took a train to Chicago.

ii. Zina Payne 11,16 was born on 30 Mar 1871 in Wayne County, West Virginia. He
appeared in the census in 1880 in C eredo Dist, Wayne, West Virginia. He died on 13 Jul
1947 in Santa Barbara County, California.
Zina is one of the few men with that name in the nation. He married a woman named Addie
and died in California:

iii. William E Payne 11,21 was born in 1873 in Wayne County, West Virginia. He appeared

William's birth record has the year, but not the month or day.

I lose him in a sea of Williams after 1880.
iv. Thomas Payne 11,22 was born on 22 Jan 1875 in Wayne County, West Virginia. He
appeared in the census in 1880 in C eredo Dist, Wayne, West Virginia.

Albert and both of his parents are "Pane" on the birth register.
22 Jun 1877, Albert, parents William and Malinda.

I can't find a death record. It's possible he started using another name after
his mother died, one that didn't sound like "Katie", and his death record
doesn't say "Cady".
vii. Anthony McCullogh Payne 1,26-28 was born on 20 Jun 1884 in Wayne County, West
Virginia. He appeared in the census in 1900 in C eredo Dist, Wayne, West Virginia. He
died on 11 Dec 1969 in Huntington, Cabell, West Virginia. He was buried in Ashland, Boyd,

likely he died in Summers county.
Son William Cady Payne's 1924 death certificate says Joseph was born in Hanover
County, Virginia. That may be true. Joseph Payne and Margery Ann Cady were married on
14 Oct 1838 in Lawrence County, Ohio.
5. Margery Ann Cady 8,30-32,35-38 was born on 8 Jun 1821 in New York. She was christened

Arguments for:
He's in the same section as his brother, William C Payne, and William's wife,

Birth date matches the census entries.
I can't find him in 1900.
Arguments against:
Payne is a very common name.
I can't find a death record.
I can't find a marriage record, either.
If he did marry, it was late in life, as our Albert was single in 1880, at age 41.

buried in Battle Creek, Calhoun, Michigan - Oak Hill Cem.
Laura and her husband wer first cousins, which is probably how a lady from kentucky and
West Virginia met a gentleman from Rochester, New York and Battle Creek, Michigan.
Laura Payne's obituary:
At their country home on the Marshall road, Saturday, Feb 15, 1908. Laura Payne Cady,
wife of D. W. [Daniel Waterman] Cady, passed away, age 63 years and six months, buried
Tuesday afternoon Feb. 18 from the residence of her son, Will A. Cady of 105 North Union
Street.
Laura Payne Cady was born near Ashland, Kentucky August 14, 1844, being a daughter of
Joseph Payne. [Other sources say her birth town was Catlettsburg, which is near Ashland.]
Her father was one of the well-known Payne family of Virginia and an early settler in the
western part of old Virginia, which later became West Virginia. Mrs. Cady was a direct
descendent of General William Payne, better known as "Little Joe" Payne of
Revolutionary fame. The Payne family was one of the early English settlers of the Virginia
colony. They have been closely identified with the history of Virginia and the nation.
She spent her girlhood days on the old plantation, which adjoined the Big Sandy River
in West Virginia. [She was] Educated at the Academy for Girls at Huntington, West Virginia
and then two years at a private school for young ladies at Cincinnati, Ohio.
Laura Payne was married to D. W. Cady, then of Rochester, New York, on April 12, 1865
and immediately removed to Battle Creek with her husband, where she has since made her
home until her death last Saturday.
By her many excellent traits of character and true Southern spirit she has endeared
herself to all her all, winning for herself a wide circle of friends who will sincerely
regret her death.
Besides her husband D. W. Cady, her immediate family are [children] Will A. Cady and
Mrs. Harry A. Heiman, [Holly Cady] of this city and Mrs. Grant S. Bennett, [Morge Cady] of
New York City, all of whom were with her during the 12 weeks of illness.
Owing to the inclemency of the weather Mrs. Cady's remains were removed from the
country house to the residence of her son, Will A. Cady of 105 North Union street, where
the last sad family gathering was held Tuesday afternoon, attended by the many friends and
relatives.
Rev. Wm. S. Potter officiated at the funeral. After the services body was placed in the
vault at Oak Hill cemetery and will be interred later in the spring.
Mrs. Cady is survived by three brothers and three sisters, Mrs. Thomas Charlton of
Ironton, Ohio, Mrs. Ella McCullock of Hinton, West Virginia, Mrs. B. B. Burke of St.
Petersburg, Florida and William, Alexander and Arthur, all of Kenova, West Virginia.

He is Arthur Cady of Kenova, West Virginia in sister Laura's 1908 obituary.
Their marriage record is misleading. The clerk put "over the age of" 21 and
18, respectively. The transcriber saw that ane made Arthur 21 and Annie 19. Arthur was 32,
Annie really was 19.
Marriage: 03 Mar 1881, Lawrence, Ohio
Groom: Arthur W. Payne, age 21
Bride: Annie J. Drown, age 19
I can't find them in 1900. This is the only census I have before Arthur dies in
1919. I'm relying on the AF a lot more than I'm usually comfortable with on this
family. All of the facts I've been abe to check do check, however; maybe it was one of
the 75% that was accurate.

Morgia Ella McCullough, born December 22, 1860, died December 11, 1948, buried at
Hilltop Cemetery, Hinton, Summers County, WV. [She is 5/12 years old in the 1860 census,

Fourth Generation
10. Ela, Eli, Ely Cady ~ DE38,48,77-80 was born on 4 Apr 1781 in Canaan, Columbia, New
York. He died on 21 Dec 1845 in Wayne County, New York. He was buried in Williamson,
Wayne, New York - Pleasant View Cem.
Family tradition, based on a 1921 DAR application, says Ela's father was Palmer Cady.
I haven't been able to prove it as of 15 April 1999. (Ted Pack).
William Waterman Cady's obituary says he came to Rochester in 1837, when he was 11. It
doesn't say if he came with his family.
Ela's gravestone says he died 21 Dec 1845, aged 65, which makes his birth year 1780.
The DAR application says he was born 4 Apr 1781 and died 17 Dec 1843.
Ely and his wife Betsey had these children christened on these dates at the Congregational
Church of New Concord, Chatham, Columbia, New York:
04 Jul 1823: Morya Ann Cady
04 Jul 1823: Rebeca Cady
02 Nov 1823: Alexander Frazer Cady
02 Nov 1823: Laura Elizabeth Cady
02 Nov 1823: William Waterman Cady
I can't tell if they switched churches or had forgotten to have the babies christened.
Ela, Eli, Ely Cady ~ DE and Elizabeth (Betsey) Waterman ~ DE were married between 1797
and 1810.
11. Elizabeth (Betsey) Waterman ~ DE38,48,77,78 was born on 10 Oct 1779 in Canaan,
Columbia, New York. She died on 8 Sep 1846. She was buried in Williamson, Wayne, New
York - Pleasant View Cem. Ela, Eli, Ely Cady ~ DE and Elizabeth (Betsey) Waterman ~ DE
had the following children:
i. Laura Elizabeth Cady38,78,81 was born in 1810 in Canaan, Columbia, New York. She was
christened on 2 Nov 1823 in Congregational Church of New Concord, Chatham, Columbia, New
York. She died in Feb 1900 in Lockport, Niagara, New York. She was buried on 23 Feb 1900
in Rochester, New York - Mt. Hope Cem.

ii. Alexander Frazer Cady ~38,48,77 was born on 8 Dec 1811 in Canaan, Columbia, New
York. He was christened on 2 Nov 1823 in Congregational Church of New Concord, Chatham,
Columbia, New York. He died on 18 Aug 1849 in Irondequoit, Monroe, New York. He was
buried in Williamson, Wayne, New York - Pleasant View Cem.
Little is known of Alexander. According to Cady family tradition, he died when he fell
off a horse, then pneumonia set in.
Most of the clippings from Battle Creek give his middle name as Hamilton.
Cady family tradition says his father was "Ela", "Ely" or
"Eli" Cady, and his mother Elizabeth Waterman. The Cady I have as his father is
the only Cady in the LDS IGI reference who has a son Alexander. The dates in the IGI are
about right, and his wife's name, Betsey, is a common nickname for Elizabeth. However,
the IGI church record has the father's name "Ely" and Alexander's middle
name as FRAZER. Alexander's parentage is tenuous as of January 1999.
Family tradition gives his birth date 8 Dec 1812. His gravestone says he died 18 Aug
1849, aged 37 y, 8 m, 10 d, which puts it 8 Dec 1811.
Name: Alexander Frazer Cady

According to his obituary, William worked for the Erie Canal for more than 40 years. It
mentions a grandson, William C. Badger.
Rochester Union and Advertiser, 6 Apr 1858, Page 3:
Mr. Rigney, the new Canal Collector, has made the following appointments as clerks:
First - Wm. W. Cady; Second - Michael Dailey; Third - Oakman S. Paine; Fourth - Edward
Rigney.
These gentlemen, so far as we know them, are well qualified for the performance of the
duty thus assigned them. Mr. Cady, the head clerk, has, in former years, under Mr. Mudgett
and others, borne an enviable popularity in that position. Mr. Daily has also served
before in the office successfully. The other young gentlemen are new to the duty, but will
no doubt become conversant with its details.
Mr. Rigney will make a popular Collector, and we believe the business of the Rochester
office will be transacted this season to the satisfaction of the public and the approval
of the Canal Department. It is expected that navigation will open about the 20th instant.
Rochester Union and Advertiser, 19 April 1875, Page 2:
Canal Collector Thompson has made the following appointments: First Clerk, W. W. Cady;
Second Clerk, E. F. Rigney. Both of these gentlemen are familiar with the duties of the
positions through previous service and their re-appointment will prove generally
satisfactory.
The William Cady who had a grandson Badger is this one on the 1880 census, but his
occupation is wrong:
William W. Cady, Self, 53, NY, Retired Grocer, CT, NY
Mary E. Cady, Wife, 58, NY, Keeping House, CT, MA
William J. Badger, GSon, 12, NY, At School, NY, NY
(Rochester, Monroe, New York; page 164B of the LDS transcription.)
iv. Rebecca Cady38 was born between 1802 and 1822. She was christened on 4 Jul 1823 in
Congregational Church of New Concord, Chatham, Columbia, New York.
Name: Rebeca Cady
Christening: 04 Jul 1823
Christening Place: Congregational Church of New Concord, Chatham, Columbia, New York
Father: Ely Cady
Mother: Betsey
I can't find her after 1823.
