MRS. MAPES DIES AT HOME - Death Takes Pioneer of State in Her 86th Year.
Mrs. George W. MAPES, one of the best known and most loved women in the
city of Reno, died last night at her home, 509 Ralston street, the victim
of a heart attack.
The widow of one of the most widely known citizens of Reno, Mrs. MAPES had
been active in church and social affairs and had a host of firends in the
city. At the time of her death she was surrounded by all of the members of
her family and her physician, Dr. A. L. Stadtherr.
Born JOSEPHINE WHITCRAFT, September 28, 1848, at La Porte, Indiana, Mrs.
MAPES crossed the plains in an ox team when she was four years old. Her
father became justice of the peace in Plumas county, California.
In 1866, Josephine WHITCRAFT married George Washington MAPES in Beckwith,
Cal., and came to Nevada on a honeymoon trip, to reside here the rest of
her life.
The couple had eight children, but lost four of them, victims of
diphtheria, within six weeks. Three children are living now and all are
active in business and social affairs of the state. Always interested in
young people, Mrs. MAPES has given a home to 20 young girls and provided
for their college education and musical training.
Mrs. MAPES was a charter member of Trinity Guild of the Episcopal church,
General O. M. Mitchell Relief Corps, Rebekah Lodge No 7 and the Twentieth
Century Club. At various times she has filled all of the offices of the
Relief Corps.
Among other organizations were the Elderberry Club, composed of pioneer
women of Nevada, Nevada Federation of Women's Clubs, of which she was
chairman of the Pro-need department at the time of her death, and the
Parent-Teachers' Association. She was also an honorary member of the
Whitaker Seminary for girls and the Latimer Art Club.
Surviving Mrs. MAPES, and with her at the time of her death, were the
following children, with the following children, with their wives and
children: Mr. and Mrs. George L. MAPES, Mr. and Mrs. Charles W. MAPES,
Charles MAPES, Jr., and Gloria MAPES and Mr. and Mrs. George W. ROBINSON
and Oscar ROBINSON.
The funeral arrangements have not been completed but will be announced
later by the Ross-Burke company.
