I have a few items for you. I was researching M.J. and his brother Bartlett Curtis for
the Nevada Historical Society. They were both prominent builders in the Reno, Nevada area
during the late 1800's and early 1900's.
1880 census, Nevada, Washoe county, Reno has Mary T and Morrell along with Ron, son, 6
born VT and Walter, son, 4 born Mass along with his brother Bartell N. Curtis, 27 VT.
Interesting to note both Morrell and Bartell (thats how they spelled it) are also listed
1880 census in Candelaria Nevada working as carpenters.
Re: Mary:
Daily Nevada State Journal 4 August 1882.
Sudden Death....M.J. Curtis yesterday received a telegraph dispatch from his father at
West Burke, Vermont, announcing the death of his wife on the evening of August 1st. Mrs.
Curtis left here for the East only a few weeks ago, and the last letter Mr. Curtis
received from her stated she was in excellent health. His many friends have deeply
sympathize with him in his sudden bereavement.
Nothing more in the Reno papers that he went back East.
I will answer your other post here. Wife Two??
Territorial Enterprise newspaper Virginia City, Nevada 1886-92
Curtis, M.J. Reno, Nv son born Reno, Nv 2/10/1886
Curtis, M.J. Reno, Nv daughter born Reno 9/29/1887
No other information found for her name.
I found a Merrill E. Curtis died Aug 21, 1886, 6 month 10 days. Buried in Hillside
cemetery, Reno. To look at this go to
www.idreamof.com/cemetery/nv.html and go to Washoe
County down at the bottom and go to Hillside cemetery under M. It is line 220.
A possible third wife for M.J. Curtis????
Morrill Joseph Curtis married Winfred Willoime Hurd on July 6, 1896 in Virginia City,
Storey County, Nevada. Record can be found in the County Courthouse located in Storey
Co., Nv in Volume C on page 33
You can go to
www.familysearch.org and key in United States and Nevada for Harriett Hurd,
widowed, and find her and her nine children listed in Virginia City, Nevada. Winnie is 11
and born in California.
M.J. and Winifred are in Washoe county, Reno, Nv 1910 census. With them are Elbert D,
Melvin J, Allen, sons and Winnie's sister Edith Hurd.
M.J. and Winifred are in Washoe county, Reno, Nv 1920 census Elber, Melvin, Allen Curtis
and Edith Hurd are with them also.
After that I have not found M.J. and Winifred. by 1920 Morrill is 71 so it's possible
he died before 1930 census. Winifred was 51 in 1920 so she might have remarried or went
to live with one of her sons.
Hope this gives you some information. I also have family information on his brother
Bartlett if you want it.
Regards, Arline in Reno
