BIG VALLEY GAZETTE – BIEBER, LASSEN COUNTY, CAL.
WEDNESDAY, DECEMBER 4, 1901
We understand that both the children of Dr. and Mrs. Bradshaw have scarlet
fever in a mild form.
We regret to learn that Crawford Cox, son of Mr. and Mrs. Fred Cox, of
Sacramento, was accidentally killed last week at his home near Bakersfield,
by being caught in the belting of a gasoline engine. He was 39 years of age
and leaves a wife and three children. (1:2)
Kauf Coney and Mrs. Luima Norwood returned from Alturas last Thursday,
having been excused from attendance as witnesses in the Brown case until
next Monday.
We learn that in the case of the People vs. James Lang, of which mention was
made in our last issue, the jury rendered a verdict of guilty of assault,
and the defendant was sentenced to pay a fine of $100, or be imprisoned in
the county jail for 50 days. The fine was paid.
The little baby of Mr. and Mrs. James T. Summers fell against the stove
Sunday and had her right arm severely burned.
Mrs. Mildred Mecum arrived in Fall River yesterday from San Francisco on a
visit to her parents, Mr. and Mrs. James Snell. She will remain until after
the holidays.
The trial of J. W. Brown at Alturas is making slow progress. Up to last
night but seven jurors had been secured and it is doubtful if the remaining
jurors will be secured before another week; in the meant time, new witnesses
are being subpoenaed from the valley, all the three towns; Adin, Lookout and
Bieber furnishing their quota.

Brown case now on trial at Alturas are Delos Brownell, Perry Summers, Alvin
Holcomb, O. P. Holcomb and Robert Gibson.
WEDNESDAY, DECEMBER 11, 1901
J. T. Boyd arrived from Susanville last Saturday and on Monday took the
stage for Alturas, having been subpoenaed as a witness in the Brown case.
A full jury was secured for the trial of J. W. Brown before the Superior
Court at Alturas Monday and a postponement was had until this morning to
give the attorneys an opportunity of looking up the testimony taken before
the grand jury.
We regret to learn that J. M. Jones, who left here with his family for
Sacramento last fall in the hope of improving his health, is doing very
poorly. Mrs. Jones writes that he is falling away and getting so weak that
he can hardly get around. We hope to have better news of his condition
soon.
New subpoenas for the Brown trial are still coming forward, the new names
being M. J. Ayers, C. M. Lamburth and Ed Dunlap. The first two left for
Alturas Monday and Ed took the stage this morning.
Miss Zoa Perkiss, daughter of Mr. and Mrs. Charles W. Perkiss, was married
at Red Bluff a week ago last Saturday to Harry W. Wagner. Mrs. Wagner was
raised in this valley and has many friends here who tender their
congratulations and wish the young couple a happy and prosperous future.
MONTGOMERY DIVORCE SUIT
As recently announced in the Searchlight, the divorce of Carrie C.
Montgomery against Richard C. Montgomery was dismissed on stipulation. The
action was brought by the wife several years ago on the ground of failure to
provide. A settlement of property interests was shortly after effected, the
suit was not pressed and this week it was dismissed. Now, the husband takes
the part of plaintiff and on Saturday, through Brainard & Perry, brought
suit for divorce on the ground of desertion. The couple were married in
Modesto in 1877 and the alleged desertion occurred at Fall River Mills.
J. T. Summers returned from Alturas last Thursday evening, having been
excused on account of sickness in his family.
MARK BASSETT MARRIED
Mark, son of I. W. Bassett of this valley, who left here some seven years
ago for the lower country, entered the matrimonial yoke on the first of this
month. Mark has been doing quite well since he left here and now that he
has settled down to married life we hope he will continue to prosper.
We take the following account of the wedding from one of our exchanges:
Mark H. Bassett and Mrs. Laura Slater, the announcement of whose
prospective marriage appeared in Monday evening’s Democrat, were married the
same evening by Rev. J. J. Morgan. The marriage occurred at the Morgan
residence in the presence of a few relatives and friends at about 7 o’clock.
After the ceremony the bridal couple drove out to Wm Browning’s’ farm,
where they intend to make their future home. Mr. Bassett is employed as
foreman on the Browning farm.
CLIPPINGS FROM THE ARGUS
Frank Chisholm is suffering from the wound, which he received while lifting
a keg of staples, a couple of week’s ago. A protruding staple entered the
flesh of the little finger, making a deep and ugly wound. It was doing
nicely until a day or two back, when severe pains set in, and this morning
it was necessary to have the finger lanced.

HIS END WAS PEACEFUL
Bill Smith, who with his brother, John lived in this valley for several
years and owned a farm about six miles east of here, died suddenly near
Round Mountain one day last week. The Redding Searchlight gives the
following account of the finning of the body:
With his eyes wide open, his face set in peaceful repose, his hat in one
hand and his walking staff in the other, seated in a fence corner 250 yards
from his destination, “Uncle Billy” Smith was found dead several days ago in
the vicinity of Buzzards Roost. It was as if he sat down to rest from his
long walk and passed peacefully away. So reports Coroner Green, who has
returned from holding an investigation of the case. (8:3)
