DEATH OF W. D. MORRIS
The news of the death of W. D. Morris came as a startling surprise. He had
been ailing for sometime from Bright’s disease and death was not unexpected,
but it came with a suddenness un-looked for.
Mr. Morris was here Monday afternoon accompanied by his wife. He had taken
a bath at the Bassett Hot Springs and then came to town and got shaved. He
thought the baths would help him and said he intended taking a bath there
every day. But this was not to be.
On their return home, Mrs. Morris prepared supper. Mr. Morris was seated
on the porch off the dining room and Mrs. Morris took the supper to him
there. She had scarcely placed the meal before him, when he suddenly fell
ever and expired.
Warren Dudley Morris was born in Hickory County, Missouri, on the 23d day
of December 1850. His parents moved to Morgan County, in the same state,
when he was an infant. In 1875, Mr. Morris came to California and settled
in this valley, near the town of Lookout. In May 1877, he was married to
Ella D. Houston and two sons and one daughter are the result of this union;
both wife and children survive to mourn his loss.
Mr. Morris was a man of strong and sterling character. Trained as a
schoolmaster, he followed that vocation for twelve years, always taking
first rank among the educators of Modoc County. Politically, he was
affiliated with the Democratic Party and was a recognized leader in the
county. As a reward for his fealty, he was nominated and elected to the
assembly in 1886 and served with great credit to himself and his
constituents. At the expiration of his term in the legislature, he engaged
in mercantile pursuits, and continued therein until a short time before his
death.
In his death, this valley has lost one of its most earnest advocates and
one who was ever ready to aid in its development, to encourage and foster
new enterprises and to assist in its up building with everything at his
command.
The interment took place in the Lookout Cemetery yesterday afternoon.
Services were held at the house by Rev. Mr. Walters and a large concourse of
neighbors and friends followed the remains to their last resting place,
there may he sleep in peace. (1:2)
George Oliver was called to Redding Monday by the serious illness of his
sister, Mrs. Maggie Ballinger.
Chris Bidwell of hat Creek, on e of the Supervisors of Shasta Counties, was
here last Thursday after a horse, which had strayed up this way. He had
lost track of it for two years.
The condition of L. E. Leonard is not so favorable this week, and his chance
for recovery seems less favorable. Everything possible is being done for
him and it is hoped that he will soon show signs of improvement.
DIED

California aged 35 years, 11 months and 16 days.

the derrick pulleys, with which hay was being unloaded, got her fingers
caught, and they were quite badly lacerated.

will probably become a resident of the valley again.
MOTION TO SET ASIDE
J. W. BROWN MOVES TO SET ASIDE INDICTMENT AGAINST HIM
Last Monday morning R. E. Leventon was brought into the Superior Court and
arraigned under indictment charging him with assisting in the murder of
Martin Wilson at the Lookout lynching on May 31st. At the defendant’s
request, he was allowed until Wednesday morning at 10 o’clock to plead
guilty or not guilty.
J. W. Brown was arraigned under the same indictment, was asked to plead,
but instead, his attorneys presented a motion to the court, to set aside the
indictment against him upon several grounds, the most prominent being that
he was compelled to testify before the grand jury, who sound the indictment,
and also that persons, who had no right to be present were with the grand
jury, during their investigation of the matter and influenced their actions.
To sustain the grounds of this motion, a large number of witnesses were
subpoenaed, the list being as follows: Miss Minnie Neal, Robert Courtright,
D. C. Berry, F. S. Heard, John Fisher, G. W. Duke, J. H. Derevan, D. P.
Browne, B. F. Cloud, Curtis Williams, J. M. Thompson, David Baty, Wm
Mullins, B. m. Wayman, Frank McClintock, J. P. Hall, G. W. Cambron, Michael
G. Smith, George C. Turner, Ira S. Cannon, R. B. Clark and A. C. Kistler.
Spencer & Raker, C. A. Raker and G. F. Harris are attorneys for the
defendant and have been busy all week presenting testimony in support of the
motion to the court. – Alturas New Era
