BIG VALLEY GAZETTE – BIEBER, LASSEN COUNTY, CAL.
WEDNESDAY, MARCH 7, 1900
A serious accident happened at the Iron Mountain Mine last Wednesday, which
cost the lives of eight men. By the collapse of what is known as the copper
level, eight men were entombed. Rescue work was immediately begun and
carried forward with all possible haste, but it was three o’clock in the
afternoon, when the first man was found. Two more men were recovered at ten
o’clock that night and later two more were taken out. The three remaining
victims had not been rescued at last accounts and no hope is entertained for
saving their lives. Four of the five already recovered were taken out
alive, but have since died.
