Hi Linda,
RE the interesting question: don't I know it. I already faced a slightly different
form of that question in trying to imagine how her death got reported in a territorial
newspaper in Utah/Nevada, when her last known residence was in Iowa?
What kept me going was the uniqueness of the name and the similarity in timelines (the
latter being pretty much equivalent).
Her disappearance from that family in Iowa has always been a mystery. This wouldn't
be the first time I've followed a lead like this one, and a previous lead that I had
thought was a long shot did actually find her in Iowa. In that case I was able to verify
her identity.
Some of the other route(s) explored were:
1. Death in Iowa, transported for burial back to Clark County OH where her brother and at
least two other siblings lived.
2. Death in Iowa, transported for burial back to Augusta County VA, where the family
originated before moving to Clark County OH.
3. Other reasons for disappearing from the family in Iowa. I have a copy of the poem she
wrote to her brother in Clark Co. OH after she moved to Iowa with her new husband. She
was definitely not a happy camper there. Did she simply leave Iowa and return to Clark
County OH, via divorcing Henry Chatten or by making him a "grass widower"?
4. Many, many others.
I'm always hot to find out more about Lucretia (BAYLEY) CHATTEN, her brother James R.
BAYLEY, and other siblings in Clark County OH because I'm really trying to ID their
parents. It's been one of those lifelong Brick Walls, unfortunately.
But thanks for that pointer to Quintin. I've actually met the guy at some of the
American-Canadian Genealogical Society conferences in NH. He has a strong presence there
and of course in RI where he's headquartered and where many French-Canadian families
settled. He was the first guy to digitize Tanguay, if I remember right. I still have
some of his early CD collections here. I'll definitely check out his inventory
again.
Thanks also for the museum link and phone number.
Even if this connection to Lucretia W. CHITTEN in San Francisco does pan out, it still
wouldn't be the longest or most convoluted French-Canadian lineages I've traced.
That's why I always play the long shots, just in case.
It's ironic that this long shot might originate in Nevada, where I wouldn't dare
place any other kind of long shot bid!
