First you need to determine in WHICH Yellow Jacket Mine disaster (and which
Yellow Jacket). The most likely disaster was the huge fire in April 1869
that killed at least 39 miners and closed that portion of the Yellow Jacket
Mine forever, entombing many of the known 39 dead and perhaps others who
were single miners who had no one to report their disappearance. Death was
common on the Comstock, with funerals daily, but this was the worst mining
disaster in Nevada history.
Perhaps your relative was a firefighter? There were others, but the
firefighters were the big heroes of the Yellow Jacket Mine disaster and some
died in it.
Today the Ghostly headframe of the Yellow Jacket provides a haunting
reminder of that disaster. It is one of the views from suites of the
supposedly haunted 1859 Gold Hill Hotel. In honor of the deaths, we invited
all ghosts in the area to attend my son's wedding there last December-none
were obvious but everyone certainly enjoyed themselves, so if they exist
they seemed to have approved.
University of Nevada Reno library Special Collections has records of the
Yellow Jacket Mine Corporation, but clearly, if he were a miner, they didn't
keep great records in 1869 or they would have known who was on-shift and
thus unaccounted. If your relative may have been a firefighter, you might
contact the Comstock Firemen's Museum on C Street in Virginia City,
775-847-0717. Also, as a "man who knows everything," you might contact Joe
Curtis at the Mark Twain bookstore 775-847-0454, also on C Street. Joe, a
member of an old Comstock family, has collected for himself and for sale all
types of books, photos, etc.

I have been told by family members that one of our relatives was one of the
men who helped to save some miners in the Yellow Jacket Mine. Does anybody
know where I could find anything to prove this? His name was CHEGWIDDEN.
Thanks.
