Hello Listers,
I have only been on this list for a very short time and as of yet have not received e-mail
from the list. Since today is my birthday I thought I might write a little story and
introduce myself.
I was born about this time of day seventy years ago, 1935. My father delivered me at
home. I'm sure he had a lot of help, because both grandmothers were there also. My
mothers mother had probably come to Gold Hill to take care of my mother who had, with my
father, a head on collision with another car on their way to Carson City. This accident
put my mother in the hospital from August until November. I guess we were all lucky to be
in Gold Hill on this day. Being on the passenger side in those days, before seat belts
and shoulder straps, was not a good place to be. She suffered many injuries to her face
and both jaws, which had to be wired together and a broken shoulder and collar bone. Dad
had a few stitches to reattach his nose, and a few bruises, but was released to return
home.
My family had arrived in Gold Hill from Greenville California in late 1934, to work in a
mine that my grandfather had leased from a friend. They had all been miners and lumbermen
in Calif. My dad was a millwright so worked on stampmills to keep them running. My
uncles were truck drivers and general labor. My Dad, Mother, brother and I returned to
Calif in 1937, the others stayed up until the early forties.
Our collected families had been in mining In Nevada and Calif since 1848. They had mined
in Placer, El Dorado, Plumas, Lassen & Butte Counties in Calif and Pioche in Lincoln
Co, and ofcourse Storey Co Nevada. Some had prospected in Utah, Arizona and Mexico in the
late 1800's
One g-grand uncle made money in Pioche, then went to Salt Lake, made more money, moved to
France, got in with a French Mining Syndicate, they went to French Guiana to mine. Lost
everything, including his family, and had to borrow money from friends in Pioche to get
back home. He was a die-hard miner! He died a pauper in Nogales AZ in 1901.
Family names in mining are Ament, Day, Eddy, Ely, Swan, White
