Hello Everyone,
I recently found this letter from my 3rd-great-grandmothers sister Missouri A. Gregory to
her brother Lt. John Franklin Gregory. According to it she was living in Virginia City on
Aug. 15, 1862.
I'm presently trying to find any trace of her out there (i live in KY) and was
wondering if anyone could help.
I know in 1850 she was in Graves Co.,KY and in 1870 i found her in White Pine Co.,NV as a
"Bath House Keeper", but so far this letter is all i've found between
1850-1870. I'm not familiar with Storey County so i really don't know where to
look. So anything would be helpful. Here is the letter:
Virginia City N. Territory
Friday August 15th 1862
Dear Brother,
I received yours of June 30th this week also one from mother of July 4th which gave me
great satisfaction to
hear that all was alive and well. Which i can hardly expect to hear these trouble some
times.
I am well and hope this may find you all well i haven't much to write that could be
any news to you of late i've heard from Californa frequently the people of our
acquaintance there are all well not many big strikes among them none that i know of except
the boys at the Rail Road Flat they have a very good thing. Lige Butler wrote to one of
his acquaintance here last week for
me to let him know where you are and how you are he wanted to write to you. I told him May
Lewis is in the Federal Army, Frank from the turn things have taken lately i am afraid the
worst is not over.
From our last telegraph dispatches the Rebels have been getting the
best of it which will encourage them further. I see a call for three hundred thousand
volunteers and if the amount is not made up by today they will resort to drafting. Frank i
write this to you but fear by the time it reaches its destination you will not be there.
Write as often as you can and as soon give my best wishes to all in the right cause of my
acquaintance.
It is reported here today that the President has made a call on
Californa for Ten Thousand troops i don't know that it ia reliable. No more at present
but wish you and all the rest good luck and restoration to peace home kindred and
friends.
Remain as ever your sister truely,
M.A. Gregory
