Lots of interesting stuff on Davis. To start:
Listed as a resident in the Virgina City Directory 1862 is a John F. Davis, miner, Ophir
Claim.
From the journals of Alf Doten: Virginia City, September 1,
1865. A James Davis, native of Canada, about 30 years of age
was going down into mine with rest of night shift to work at
6 o'clock. Descending on ladder into the old North Potosi
shaft which goes from bottom of D St. tunnel-750 ft from mouth of tunnel-got dizzy or
nervous or misstep, being a
green hand only working since Monday-fell 80 ft-at 60 ft
passed through hole in flooring, only about a foot square
picked up dead-head badly smashed-hit several others who were
on the ladder but did not knock them off.
From the ledger of the 'Gold Hill Civil Burial Register':

years of age. Leaves wife and 3 sons.
Dan. W. Davis, native of New York. d. April 22, 1891 at 64

In addition, in 1887 Alf Doten refers to Nevada's Lieut.
Governor Davis, his wife, and his sister, Miss Davis.
Mentioned again in 1893 as Asst. Secretary Davis of the
Senate.
And in September 1903 the Virginia Chronicle newspaper
changed hands from J. L. Considine to J. M. Davis.
