Dear Listers:
I'm a new subscriber to this list and I am searching for an
ancestor Philo Bellinger who left St. Lawrence Co. NY sometime in
the 1850s and took a journey westward. Where he ended up, I am
not sure.
My Philo Bellinger was born in Herkimer Co. NY in abt. 1826. He
was the son of Johann Jost Bellinger (aka Joseph) and Delia
Kessler. This couple moved from Herkimer Co. in about 1844 and
settled near Edwardsville, St. Law. Co. NY. Philo had two
brothers, Marcus and Josiah. In his will of 1855, Marcus leaves
Philo $300.00 and the will records that Philo was "of the State
of California". Whether he actually made it to CA is not known.
I have LDS information that a Philo Bellinger married an Eliza
White in Hermon, St. Law. Co. circa 1852 but I am not sure if
this is "my Philo" or if he had a wife, whether she went west
also.
I have found in my searches a Philo Bellinger m.Sarah Gaines in
Virginia City, Storey Co. 11 Nov. 1870 and also a Philo Bellinger
who was an enumerator for a census conducted in 1890 in Gold
Hill, Storey NV. I have no idea if this Philo is a relative of
"my Philo"....son, gr.son, nephew??? If anyone has information
on these NV Bellingers, I would be delighted to hear from you.
