Nancy:
I will check Martin Powers name at the Nevada Historical Society when I am up there next.
I will see what we have in the way of records for the Hale and Norcross mine also.
About the time Martin was there, thousands of miners came and went. They moved from mine
to mine and from one town to the next - wherever there were riches. There were no one
certain group of miners from any one country that worked in the mines just everyone
willing to work in hot deep mines. The Cornish had a lot of miners in Virginia City as
they had worked their mines back home. I also found a lot of Irish, Englishman also. The
pay was high at 4.00 a day so many worked the mines.
All the census information for Nevada only lists Ireland and where ever they came from.
Not many records actually list the county. Sometimes in an obit it might be listed.
Thru Ancestry. com I show for Storey county Nevada, Virginia City the following:
Martin Powers married Elizabeth Connelly September 15, 1880. Another listing for Storey
county records shows E Connelly 18 married Martin Powers October 2, 1880 residence Gold
Hill, Nevada (different dates..one could be actual event date and other date published in
newspaper)
Also Death.....Martin Powers 31 July 1881 Storey County Coroners records 1879-1887.
Don't know if these might beyour gggrandfather.
I will get back to you after I visit the Nevada Historical Society.
