If I remember right it would of been the late 1950's and early 1960's, when the
T.V. show "Death Valley Day's" was on.

and he hated the nickname "Borax"

Hi!
At a garage sale last Sat. I bought a scale model of the Borax 20 mule team,
that for half a century hauled borax from Furnace Creek in Death Valley, 162
miles to Mojave, California & from the mines at Old Borate to Dagget, the
nearest railroad points. The one way trip from mine to railroad point took
ten days. (An information & instruction sheet came with it.)
"One of the best drivers was Bill PARKINSON, better known as Borax Bill."
The internet has websites with more information about this interesting part
of Nevada history.
Des anyone know when Borax put out this Death Valley Days hobby kit offer?
Many thanks, Heather
