Hello - I am new to this list. I had family living in Virginia City and Gold Hill between
about 1865 and 1900. I am anxious to learn as much as I can about them. If anybody has any
information, please let me know. I do know some things, but would like to fill in the
cracks.
MOORE - James Albert MOORE from Tywardreath, Cornwall arrived in the area before 1880.
I'm not sure if he came with anybody. Also I'm not sure where else he might have
been before he landed in Storey County. He married Mary Jane CHEGWIDDEN in Virginia City
1880 and also was naturalized there the same year. (I have those documents.) They had five
children in Virginia City, Beatrice May (1881), Ellen Maude (1883-1900), James (April
1885-June 1885), Ida Lorraine (1891), Gladys Vera(1896) and then moved to Nevada City CA
about 1897. Two more children was born there James Albert (1898), Bernice Lila (1901).
While in Storey County he was a mine foreman in Gold Hill. The family moved to Oakland in
1908, James being sick with miner's consumption. He died in 1909 in Oakland.
James' parents were Richard MOORE and Mary SPARGO. They did not come to the US.
CHEGWIDDEN - Richard CHEGWIDDEN came to the Virginia City area about 1865. He left his
wife Eliza HOSKIN and their three children behind in Cornwall. Those children were Mary
Jane (1861), John (1862) and Annie Maria (1864). He sent for them in 1874 and they had
four more children in Gold Hill, Ida (1876), Richard Lincoln (1878), Albert Garfield
(1881) and Frederick (1884). All the children lived to adulthood. John, Richard and
Frederick never married. Albert married an older woman and they had no children, so the
family name died out.
Richard was a miner and musician. He died in 1894 and was buried in the Odd Fellows
Cemetery in Gold HIll. Eliza and some of the children moved to Nevada City CA at some
point and she died there in 1906.
HOSKEN - Eliza's family was also from Cornwall. I don't know much about them, only
that she had a sister named Maria, who married a man named Dabb and she lived later in
Nevada City CA. Their mother was Phillippa TREVERTON and father was named Richard HOSKEN.
I don't believe they came to the US.
I am hoping somewbody on the list recognizes some of these names!
Thanks!
