I found this interesting reference to Duffy in the Journals of Alf Doten, newspaperman of
the time.
January 16, 1885, Carson City. The crack of a pistol about 3 o'clock this morning gave
an old time Comstock smack to the general routine of Carson life. Doc Benton, the well
known livery stable man, shot one Duffy, a mining man known on the Comstock and
Superintendent of the North Carson Mine, through the body, inflicting what is considered
to be a mortal wound. Benton was in his stable, being attracted by the out cries of his
wife and child at his residence nearby, ran to the rescue found Duffy assaulting his wife
and shot him. Duffy was an acquaintance and was said to have been drunk. There are various
versions of the affair, but it is a grievously sad episode at best. Benton has many
sympathizing friends.-End
