Ann:
There were no birth or death records kept in Nevada until 1887 when the first vital
statistics laws was passed. Prior to that date, the only possible sources available for
proof of birth are newspapers or baptismal records, also check copies of existing
newspapers.
Storey county Nevada death and birth records from 1862-1903 show the following:
Cox, John. Origin: Ireland, Age 37, male. Date of death 6 March 1882 Page 36 Storey Co.
Coroner's Recs. 1879-1887.
So with John passing away in 1882 and Thomas Patrick being born in 1878 that pretty much
assures you he was born in Nevada.
If you want I can look at the microfilm of the Territorial Enterprise newspaper. That was
published in Virginia City at that time. Most times they have a Marriage/Birth/Death
column in the paper. They should have Thomas's birth listed.
Please let me know as I am at the Nevada Historical Society a few times a week and can
look it up.
