Bottom Line First: Other than the possible 1900 census, I found nothing else that you may
not have had. His travels indicate there probably wouldn't be much information in
Nevada (Washoe or Tonopah). The county might have a property listing in one of the old
"Big" books, a marriage record (IF they married there). It "appears"
he went back to Nova Scotia after his first tour of the US, but after that he appears to
live primarily in British Columbia, being from there on his marriage certificate. Kaslo,
BC is in a very beautiful place, but remote. If he had any serious medical problems,
Spokane might have been his choice. Kaslo, also quite cold in the winter, perhaps he was
a "snow bird" wintering (or traveling through) Spokane.
When you post, post the basic criteria information, it helps volunteers find who you seek.
In this case, his full date of birth (That is always important), where he was born if
known. Other information, such as where they died, parents, spouse, siblings, also help
some volunteers.
In your case, you have a posted family tree, post the link, that always helps:
http://trees.ancestry.com/tree/27327792/person/5089874472
I will post some info you already have, as some volunteers don't have access to the
trees. Others might need help in seeing what you have:
The 1900 Census for Washoe, Washoe County, Nevada, enumerated 16 June.
Melvin [sic] Hamilton, born Mar 1878 in Canada, immigrated 1898/status "Al"(The
enumerators were instructed to use this term to indicate the person was an Alien.
"Pa" meaning "Papers" indicated a person had filed their Declaration
of Intention to become a citizen. The other term: "Na" Naturalized). He was a
day laborer, single, living as a boarder in the home of McLean (first name ?, Heng, Keng,
Kug?)
The 1910 US Census for Tonopah Precinct, Nye County, NV, enumerated 16 April 1910. Owned
his home.
-Melvile [sic] E Hamilton, 32, born in Canada, immigrated 1898/status "Pa
Miner/Quartz Mines. Married two years (1907/1908)
-Myrtle L, 22, born in Missouri to father born in Mo, mother in Iowa. Mother of 0/0
living.
---The 1920 Census for Manhattan, Nye County, NV, shows a Myrtle Bowen, age 31 (1888/1889)
born in Missouri, married to a Frank W. Bowen, 36, Massachusetts, shift boss/gold mine.
Children: Edward 14, Frank C, 12; Mildrid (sic), 10, parents: father born in MA, mother in
Nevada. It "appears" the children were born of a different woman than Myrtle.
Myrtle matches enough criteria to be considered.
Your tree identifies he was living in British Columbia, Canada, per the 1901 Canadian
Census. Naturalized in Tonopah, NV in 1910. Living in Hants, Nova Scotia, Canada per the
1911 Canadian Census. Arrival in San Francisco on 9 Nov 1914. Marriage to Edith Moss on
14 July 1917 in Spokane, WA. Death 30 Oct 1923 in Spokane.
The 1901 Census of Canada, confirms date of birth, living as a lodger.
The 1911 Census of Canada, shows a Melville Hamilton in Victoria, Canada, born Sep 1878,
married to a Dorthea, born Mar 1883. (This person was Melville C. Hamilton, married to
Dorothea Mary Rogers, 1910 in Vancouver. I'm leavin this information to show future
researchers this is NOT the correct person).
It also shows the correct Meville Hamilton, living in Hants, born Mar 1878, son of Amos
and Annie.
The arrival in San Fran. on 9 Nov 1914, shows his last address in Westholm, BC, he was a
farmer. I wonder if World War I had any effect on his moving down to the US? Canada
being involved as part of the British Empire
The WA Digitial Archives:
http://www.digitalarchives.wa.gov/Home
has an image of the marriage certificate of Melville and Edith, 14 July 1917. It
identifies Melville born in N.S., Canada, Residence of Kaslo, BC. Edith, 29, born in
Yorkshire, England, daughter of Charles Walte Moss and Elizabeth Anne Sunderland. Other
info available on the image. It identified Melville as being divorced, this his second
marriage.
The Washington Death Certificate Index:
Melville E. Hamilton, died 30 Oct 1923, in Spokane, WA, age 45 years, 7 months, 12 days;
spouse Edith, father Amos.
