Dear Arline:
Thanks a million for the information you sent me and I don't mind you contacting me
directly. I truly appreciate all the work you've done for me.
I recently joined
Ancestry.com and have posted several messages on their message boards.
You can probably find all of my messages and people's responses to my messages by
simply typing my first and last name ("Enrique Gleason"). Most of my messages
are posted in the "GLEASON" message board. I also posted some messages in the
"MICHIGAN" and in the "SHIAWASSEE COUNTY" message boards.
Prior to my father's death, my father drove me to Tonopah, Nevada and we were able to
find my grandfather's name ("Fred T. Gleason") on an old list at the local
cemetery and from the list we were also able to find his poorly marked grave. My father
told me that he was only about thirteen years old when his father (my grandfather) killed
himself in an automobile accident.
A few years ago, while driving from Reno to Las Vegas, I stopped in Tonopah and visited
their new local historical museum. A very nice lady at the museum helped me find two old
newspaper articles regarding my grandfather. The first articles was the one you sent me
regarding the automobile accident in 1934. The second article was one about him being a
deputy sheriff and the accidental shooting of a young woman in 1907.
I have my father's birth certificate and it states that he was born in Beaver, Utah on
April 15, 1920. The 1920 Federal Census for Beaver, Utah lists my grandfather ("Fred
T. Gleason") as a "GLESON" (the census taker apparently misspelled
"GLEASON" by listing the name as "GLESON"). My grandmother is listed
under her maiden name as "GWENDOLYN CARLSON". My uncle whom was a year or two
younger than my father is listed as "WILLIAM GLESON".
According to my father, my grandmother and my grandfather separated when he was a young
boy. I was able to find my grandmother in the 1930 Federal Census for San Francisco,
California. She is listed as "GWENDOLYN GLEASON" with my father listed as
"FRED" and my uncle as "WILLIAM". A "BERNICE CARLSON" is
also listed as a neighbor and as a schoolteacher.
I never knew that my grandmother had remarried and that her new married name was
"WERTZ" until you discovered it for me with your first response to my inquiry.
From your information, I was able to discover on page 12 of the RENO EVENING GAZETTE for
Saturday, November 24, 1951 (while researching "GWENDOLYN WERTZ") that
"BERNCICE CARLSON" whom had died that day was indeed my grandmother's sister
and that her married name was "DAVIS". The article also revealed that she was a
retired schoolteacher and that she had been survived by her sister Mrs. Gwendolyn Wertz of
Reno and three brothers, Owald, C. Edwin and William O. Carlson, all of Salt Lake City.
I also recently found a very nice article regarding my grandfather ("Fred T.
Gleason") in the Nevada Mining Journal section of page six of the Nevada State
Journal for Monday, March 12, 1934 in a sub-section with the title "RANKS OF
OLD-TIMERS FAST BEING DECIMATED BY DEATH". This is the first article that clearly
reveals his full name as "FREDERICK TREAT GLEASON" and that he was born in
Langsburg, Michigan (the writer of the article probably meant "Laingsburg,
Michigan"). My previous information simply indicated "Michigan". The
article also indicates that he left a widow and two young boys, "Billy" and
"Buddy", residing in Reno. Interestingly, my father's nickname as a young
man was "Buddy" and my uncle William was called "Billy".
Again, thanks for all of your help and I hope to hear from you soon.
