The newspaper would have been the weekly Fernley Leader, which joined with the Dayton
Courier in 1986 (or before?) to create the Leader-Courier. Both were/are owned by the
Mason Valley News (Yerington, NV). Most libraries in Nevada have back issues of the
Leader-Courier on microfilm, and you should be able to get this microfilm at a LDS church
Family History center or perhaps by interlibrary loan through your local library.
However, the daily Reno Gazette-Journal would also have published such an obituary, and
might in fact have been more likely to publish it. Fernley is a "bedroom
community" for Reno, even though Fernley is in Lyon rather than Washoe County. It may
be easier to find the RGJ on microfilm.
Today the Reno Gazette-Journal owns the Mason Valley News as well as the Leader-Courier,
and in fact the three papers have been merged into one. I don't believe you can find
an article from 1990 on the RGJ website, but its worth a try.
It used to be, before massive state budget cuts, that the Nevada Historical Society
reference library would look up something like an obituary for you, esp. if you have a
newspaper reference for it. You could try that. Their number is (775) 688-1190, and they
are open W-Sa, noon to 4 pm, Pacific time.
