My great-grandfather, Simon Van Patten Condee died at Canyon City, Nevada December 30,
1863. I have a copy of his short obituary from the 'Reese River Reveille' of
December 31, 1863. Simon was a wagon train master and took several wagon trains west from
Council Bluffs, Iowa over the Old Mormon Trail then on to the gold fields of California
through Nevada. It appears he died from congestion of the lungs and was buried by a
Masonic Lodge from somewhere near Canyon City, other than this we know very little of his
last adventure west and last resting place.
Simon was a lawyer in Monroe, Wisconsin, but had a bit of wonderlust. He took wagon
trains to California seven times, in 1848,1850,1851,1853,1855,1860 and 1863.
I would like to know if anyone knows of any old cemeteries in the Canyon City area that
have been transcribed. Since we do not have any idea where he may have been buried it
could have been in Austin or Clifton. Any help with finding his burial site will be
greatly appreciated.
