Surname: HICKS
-------------------------
I am trying to help a friend in Cornwall locate info on his g-grandfather,
William Henry HICKS. He worked in the Magnolia Mine in Austin, Lander Co.,
Nevada in the late 1870s- early 1880s.
He was born in the parish of Crowan, CORNWALL in 1853 and married first,
Jane SAMPSON. She died while quite young and he then married Susan Amanda
Treloar MOYLE on 31 Dec. 1892. Susan Amanda had her origins in the neighbouring
parish of Wendron, CORNWALL. He had 2 children by his first wife, Beatrice
HICKS (1883) and William Henry HICKS (Feb 9 1886, died1894). William Henry
HICKS died 8 November 1904.
My friend has a collection of classical volumes that were signed by and
presented to Wm H. HICKS by the management/owner of "Magnolia Mine," Austin,
Nevada in 1880 prior to his return to Cornwall. He was an experienced hard-rock
miner, and made a considerable sum of money from his work in the USA as
a miner. Wm. Henry HICKS discovered a large silver ore deposit and it would
be really satisfying if we could link this discovery to the Magnolia Mine
where, if the books are
anything to go by, he must have had a good reputation and was
well-respected.
If anyone knows anything of this mine, Austin, Nevada, Wm. Henry HICKS,
or if there is a means of obtaining information on it (address of library
in Austin), I would be eternally grateful if you could point me in the
right direction.
Thanks very much,
Katie Brammer
