Apologies, if you receive this email twice. USGenWeb guidelines say that each state is
required to maintain a mail list to which all CCs must be subscribed. That state list is
where matters related to the project will be disseminated. See
http://www.usgenweb.org/volunteers/SCguidelines.shtml and
http://www.usgenweb.org/volunteers/CCguidelines.shtml for the details on that policy.
In the case of Nevada, NVGenWeb business and announcements have been primarily carried out
on the NVGEN list. That list has also had more general posts on Nevada genealogy as well.
NVGEN was the list to which I was subscribed in the beginning of my participation as a CC
in Nevada. As NVGenWeb SC, I recently requested admin status for the NVGEN list from
Rootsweb and was refused. They said it already had an admin, and I have sent them a
follow up message.
However, there is another list, NVGENWEB, which according to its archives has had little
use. I did not know that it even existed until I received a message from NVGEN which was
simultaneously posted to NVGENWEB this past October. I only subscribed to it for the
first time today.
At this point, I don't know which CCs are subscribed to which of these lists. Given
that I have so far seen only 4 replies from the 8 Nevada county coordinators in last
week's roll call, I'm not certain that all CCs are necessarily subscribed to
either list.
It seems to me that there really only needs to be one mail list to meet the USGenWeb state
list requirement.
To that end I would suggest that general genealogy discussions and questions be posted on
the NEVADA list to which I would encourage Nevada CCs to subscribe.
I would suggest that NVGenWeb-specific announcements, business, etc., be posted on
NVGENWEB (especially since it already has the project name) and that it be the one
required list to which CCs must be subscribed to meet the USGenWeb national requirement.
Hopefully, my request to admin that list will meet with some success. NVGEN probably is
not even needed.
I would appreciate your thoughts and input on the use of NVGENWEB vs. NVGEN for NVGenWeb
use.
Also, should the required list for NVGenWeb business be archived? Should only CCs be
allowed to subscribe? Or, should anyone with an interest in NVGenWeb be allowed to
subscribe? If so, should that be read-only or with the ability for anyone to post?
