Wow, I thought you could only manage a site you were actually in. You're in
AZ? That's got to be hard. How can you look things up for people?
As far as the articles are concerned....written long, long ago and not on a
computer. Doubt you could find them online, much less link them. They were
mostly about the area and about a distant cousin of mine who spent his life
looking for a cache of valuables he thought had been stashed by the
Donner-Reed party when they got hung up out there. Dan walked every inch of
those flats looking for treasure but never finding it. I, personally, don't
think it ever existed. The Reed family survived. If there had been any
real treasure, I think one of them would have gone back for it. I have been
where you can still find the wagon tracks of the Donner party. There used
to be bits and pieces of old wagons and stuff they threw out to lighten the
road. The last time I walked out there, nothing remained. Horrible how
people have to have souvenirs. As a teen, I walked the length of their
trail. They used to call it "walking the elephant". Took 2 days to walk
the 40 miles or so and I did it in late fall when it wasn't so hot. I had
water enough and no animals or wagons to deal with. I can see why they had
such problem. There's quicksand and boggy places out there I had to go
around or slog through. I can't image doing it the way they did.

Hi Becky,
It sounds like you are crackin'. Good luck on your Storey County
adventures.
I love to go to Virginia City when I'm in the area and think of the boom
days there. It is a very fun place to just browse for me. We also like the
salt water taffy store. Hubby downs that stuff like it is precious...
I'd love to have help with Elko County in your spare time>>>GRIN<< I am
a
native of the area, but live in Arizona. It is frustrating to live so far
away from the project place, but I seem to hold my own. I can always use
help though.
I wonder about putting a link to any of the articles you've written?
Have a good weekend,
Maureen

Thanks for the welcome from all of you. I'm still trying to figure out
what
I am doing. Unfortunately, real life is interfering a bit. The Virginia
City Tourism Council is starting a 'living legends" program and I'm going
to
be portraying a character around town. Not sure who, yet but I've asked
for
either Cad Thompson (ran an infamous brothel called "The Brick", or Mary
Ellen (Mammy) Pleasant. The set up and all that is time consuming. I hope
to get started downloading programs and such next week. I also recently
moved and I'm still trying to find things, lol. Maureen, if you ever need
any information about Wendover, I can help. I lived there for 9 years
total
and know the Utah side very well. My father's family ran the Pony Express
station on the east side of the Salt Flats and I'm an unofficial expert on
Salt Flat history. I've even written a couple of articles for the Utah
Historical Society about them. I lived in Elko for a couple of years and
have fond feelings for that area.
Again, thanks for the warm welcome. I hope to really get cracking here.

Nevada started out to be Washoe, Sierra Nevada, Esmeralda, Bullion, Oro
Plata! We ended up with Nevada "Snowy"! Go figure!
