PROMINENT PIOCHE MAN CLAIMED BY DEATH
THOMAS JAMES OSBORNE DIED WEDNESDAY AFTERNOON, FOLLOWING PARALITIC STROKE
Thomas James OSBORNE, one of the best known residents of Lincoln
county,
died at his home in Pioche Wednesday afternoon, February 20th, at
2:30.
He
has been in failing health for some time but was able to be about
his
business. For several months he had busied himself remodeling his
residence, and about a week before Christmas his face became badly
swollen,
which he attributed to lead poison from the paint he had been using.
He
partially recovered from this but decided to leave for Salt Lake. He
straightened up his business affairs early in the week and decided to
leave
on Tuesday. However, about three o'clock Tuesday morning he was
stricken
with paralysis and gradually sank until death claimed him.
The deceased was born March 9, 1860, in Swinton, England. He came to
America in 1870 going to Beaver, Utah, with his parents. A year later he
came to Pioche, then in the heighth of its glory as a great mining camp
and
spent most of his life there.
He began his career in Pioche as mesenger boy for the Western Union
and
then for nine years was agent for the Wells Fargo company. In 1891
he was
elected county clerk. He was soon admitted to the bar, and served the
county as district attorney from 1884 to 1896. In 1906 he removed his
family to Salt Lake where his children were educated, but still visited
Pioche often and spent much of his time there. The family returned to
Pioche to reside in 1915. In 1881 he was united in wedlock to Miss Louise
THEIS, who survives him as do also one son, Charles D. OSBORNE, and three
daughters, Isabel OSBORNE, Mrs. D. R. HARTMAN of Reading, Pa., and Mrs.
Jerome F. SEARS, of Jefferson Barracks, St. Louis, Mo.
The funeral services were conducted Friday afternoon by St. John's
Lodge
No. 18, F. & A.M. The pall bearers were H. E. FREUNENTHAL, W. E.
ORR,
Charles Lee HORSEY, A. L. SCOTT, John F. ROEDER and J. A. CLARK. Rev. P.
S. SMITHE deliverd the funeral oration.
Mr. OSBORNE was well known in Clark county, owning property in Las
Vegas. He was also interested in the famous Groom mine and had large
mining
interests in Lincoln county. He was a man of fine qualities and was
of a
genial and kindly nature which made him many friends. We extend the
sincere
sympathy of the community to those who are so sadly bereaved.
