MAN MURDERED NEW YEAR'S DAY
PETER LORENZO FATALLY STABBED BY PETER PIANTONI IN GOODSPRINGS SALOON
At 11:35 p.m. of January first in Wm. A. TAYLOR's saloon in Goodsprings,
following a drinking bout in which a number of Italians were celebrating the
New Year holiday, Peter PIANTONI stabbed Peter LORENZO in the abdomen. The
wounded man lingered until 5 p.m. of the second when he died.
The little bunch of countrymen had been enjoying a convivial time
together and in their rounds of the various resorts in Goodsprings drank
heavily. Some wordy trouble arose between LORENZO and PIANTONI during the
evening with a considerable show of spirit on both sides. PAINTONI
continued the disturbance in TAYLOR's place and was ejected from the house.
A little later as the crowd lined up for a drink PIANTONI came back and
stood at the end of the line, two men between him and LORENZI. After a
moment or two, the murderer stealthily drew a knife from his coat pocket and
reaching in front of the two men next to him, plunged the knife deep into
the vitals of his victim.
Sheriff Sam GAY, who fortunately happened to be in Goodsprings at that
time, was immediately notified of the trouble. He soon found the assailant
in Wm. BURKHART's place, BURKHART having succeeded in prevailing upon
PIANTONI to come into his place and wait. PIANTONI was placed under arrest
and brought by the Sheriff to the county jail.
LORENZO realized that he had been seriously injured, for he said "I try
to get home to see the wife and babies. Then I guess I die." He was taken
home and saw the wife and little ones for the last time. In spite of the
surgical skill of Dr. H. MC GARVEY, who was called to attend the stricken
man, LORENZI died as the sun of January second dropped behind the hills.
LORENZO was a partner in the Miners' Bar at Goodsprings with Tony
ANDRINO a former resident of Vegas and well known here. The remains of the
deceased were brought to Vegas and funeral services were held at the
Undertaking Chapel of the Las Vegas Undertaking Co., Thursday. Interment
was in the City cemetery. The deceased was 32 years of age and had a father
and mother living in Italy.
PIANTONI will have his preliminary hearing on the charge of murder
before Judge P. H. SPRINGER today (Saturday).

STRANGER FOUND DEAD IN BATH
ADOLPH REDLUND OF GOODSPRINGS DIES AT OXFORD, UNDER PECULIAR CONDITIONS
Adolph REDLUND, a miner from the Goodsprings district came to Vegas
Monday and applied for a bath at Adam KRAMER's barber shop about 3 p.m. He
was taken to the Oxford by the proprietor and left to bathe. About five
o'clock KRAMER went to the Oxford to clean up the bath and found the door
locked on the inside. Unable to get any answer to his calls he broke in the
door and found REDLUND lying in the tub dead, his head resting on the
faucets which were still running. In the tub beside REDLUND's body was a
home made electrical device for heating the water, with the current still
on.
The coroner's jury, composed of C. E. PEMBROKE, foreman, Jack PRICE,
Percival S. SMITHE, W. J. REID, R. E. ROCKWELL and Wm. L. HELM returned a
verdict that the cause of death was heart failure.
Dr. A. N. GILL testified that he held an autopsy on the remains and
found the heart and its adjuncts in a diseased and weakened condition and
that a comparatively slight shock might produce death under such
circumstances. Harry T. COFFEY, Leon ROCKWELL and Mr. SULLIVAN,
electricians, testified that the electric shock which might be suffered by
one picking up the heating apparatus would not ordinarily be serious.
While it is the general opinion that the heater was dangerous and may
have been responsible for the heart failure, the jury took the view that
there was no positive evidence that REDLUND received any shock from it.
With his partner, John ARNATON, Mr. REDLUND worked at the Christmas mine
and before that at the Anchor, near Goodsprings.
The dceased was a native of Sweden and was naturalized at North Easton,
Mass. He was a member of the Skandonaviska Brodra Forbundet of Amerika at
North Easton, was a widower and leaves three children living who are
supposed to be in Sweden.

DIED
WENGERT: In this city, Sunday morning February 4, 1917, at 5 o'clock, Frank
S. WENGERT, aged 56 years 5 months and 24 days.
In the few words above is marked the span of a busy and useful life.
Yet, although the Heavenly Father has seen fit to take from us one who was
near and dear, one whom through his activities and kindly deeds had become
an intimate and almost indespensable member of our community, Frank S.
WENGERT will remain ever enshrined in our memories.
He was born in Baveria, Germany, September 10, 1860 and at the age of
nine years came with his parents to the United States. The family settled
at Independence, Iowa where the father and mother lived until their death.
In 1876 Frank removed to Austin, Minnesota where he entered the employ
of the Chicago Milwaukee and St. Paul railroad. In Austin he met and won
Miss Ella KENEVAN to whom he was wed in 1887, and through this union his
life was crowned with a loving and faithful helpmate and a family of fine
boys and girls all of whom were at his bedside to give him hope and comfort
to the last.
In 1906, Mr. WENGERT came to Las Vegas, bringing his family here the
following year. He was first in the employ of the Armour car lines in the
construction of the ice plant. Then, for several years he was
superintendent of the Consolidated Power & Telephone Co. About a year ago
he became manager for the Las Vegas Gas Company in which he had acquired an
interest.
The last illness of Mr. WENGERT lasted about two months and until the
very moment of his death the family had hopes of his recovery although many
of our citizens realized that the sufferer was marked for the grim reaper.
Death came peacefully and painlessly and Frank WENGERT fell asleep.
He leaves surviving him, besides his sorrowing widow, five children:
Mildred (Mrs. Wm. MARSHALL), Cyril, Veronica, Louella (Mrs. V. C. HAM) and
Delano. Also two brothers, Al WENGERT of Austin, Minn., and Will WENGERT of
Independence, Iowa.
The funeral was held Tuesday morning at the Catholic Church and the
large number who gathered to pay their last respects to the mortal remains
of Frank WENGERT was indicative of the high regard in which he was held by
all. The floral tributes were wonderfully profuse and beautiful.
Mass was said by Rev. Fr. O'GRADY who paid an eloquent tribute to the
deceased. The music was very touching and beautiful and included the
following numbers: solo, "Face to Face", by Mrs. PEMBROKE, "Ave Maria" by
Mrs. BARLOW and "Somewhere the Sun is Shining" by Mrs. PEMBROKE, Mrs.
BORSACK and Mr. HARKINS.
The casket was bourn to its resting place, a concrete vault prepared for
it in the City Cemetery, by members of the B.P.O.E., Mr. WENGERT having been
a member of Goldfield Lodge. About 50 brother Elks acted as escort and
thirty automobiles made up the funeral cortege. The bearers were: Messrs
M. M. RILEY, John FAGAN, D. J. O'LEARY, Chas. FREEMAN, E. E. SMITH and W. E.
SEARS.
In the passing of our good friend and neighbor, a loving husband and
father has been called to his reward and a helpful and kindly citizen has
laid down his burden of life. With our hearts full of sympathy for the
bereaved ones we can only say "Peace be unto you."

MONTANA MAN A SUICIDE
DENNIS MURRAY COMMITS RASH ACT IN LOCAL YARDS LAST SUNDAY MORNING
Last Sunday morning, Dennis MURRAY a miner recently employed near
Phoenix, Arizona, stood beside the railroad track near the little ice house
south of the depot and watched the switch engine backing toward him. When
the back of the engine was almost abreast of him, he leaped forward and
threw himself under the wheels, his body being cut to pieces. Fred TISDIAL,
the fireman, saw the man's rash act and called to engineer O. L. PIFER to
stop as a man had been run over. When the engine came to a standstill the
fragments of the body were taken from under the fourth car from the engine.
A coroner's jury after hearing the testimony of J. H. LIGHTFOOT, Fred
TISDIAL and others brought in a verdict that "Dennis MURRAY aged about 30
years, came to his death in the yards of the Salt Lake Route in Las Vegas
between 10:30 and 10:"40 a.m. April 22, 1917 by jumping under engine and
train with suicidal intent." The jury was G. H. FRENCH, foreman, W. J.
REID, M. J. BURNES, Anthony SCHWEBIG, R. E. ROCKWELL and Lou MARTIN.
MURRAY was a member of the I. W. W. and was known as "Shoveling Murray."
From letters on his person it was ascertained that he had relatives in
Butte, Mont., Mrs. Margaret MURPHY of 506 Jasper Street and Mrs. Mary KEYS
both replying to messages sent by coroner HARKINS. The body was buried at
the expense of the county.

ACCOUNT OF DEATH OF LARRY STEBENNE
A. J. STEBENNE, Democratic nominee for the office of district attorney,
returned last Wednesday from his visit to Denver, Colorado, where he was
called by the accidental death of his brother, Larry.
Larry STEBENNE was employed by the Denver Tramway Company as painting
foreman, and had been called to a sub-plant to inspect some work that had
been finished by one of his men, and while in the act of descending from the
roof of the building he accidentally touched his arm against a wire carrying
13,000 volts, which was running along parallel to the top of the roof. He
lived 14 hours after receiving the injury.
Mr. STEBENNE's death will be extremely felt by his fellow working men,
for it was Larry who, after being in the employment of the company but four
months had caused the consolidation of several labor organizations which had
in the past received no recognition from the company, and it was Larry who,
after being elected chairman of a committee to visit the company in behalf
of the brotherhood in an endeavor to secure the signature of the company for
a closed shop.
On the night just before he met his death, and after a two hours'
session, he was successful in securing the signature of the company to an
agreement recognizing the labor union and doing away with the open shop,
which had been the policy of the company for many years. Labor lost a
valuable member in the death of Larry STEBENNE.
