Searched for Mattie TREGONING at the LDS site:
http://www.familysearch.org/eng/default.asp
And found the following:
1880 United States Census, Mineral Hill, Eureka Co. Nevada, p.217C
[Name, Relation, Marital Status, Gender, Race, Age, Birthplace, Occupation, Father's
Birthplace, Mother's Birthplace]
John TREGONING, Self, Male, W, 27, ENG, Miner, ENG, ENG
Mattie TREGONING, Wife, Female, W, 21, MO, At Home, KY, MO
T. SWINBANK, Other, S, Male, W, 48, ENG, Miner ENG, ENG
Charlie, Other, S, Male, NA 40, NV, Hunter, NV, NV
Shang Cheng, Other, S, Male, A, 35, CHI, Laborer, CHI, CHI
Charlie has no last name; "NA" perhaps stands for "Native American"?
W. TREGONING, 48, listed in 1880 Mineral Hill, Eureka Co. NV is possibly your William, as
p.217C and 217D are close, and you can never really trust ages in the census.

Dear List Members,
A few years ago I posted a message to this list but didn't
get any replies.
I am hoping to have more success this time.
I am looking for my ancestor's brother William TREGONNING
(or TREGONING)
born 1826 and his son John born 1851 in Cornwall, England.
I have found a record of their arrival in New York in 1866
aboard the SS
Pennsylvania. William is aged 39 and John 16.
Their occupation is given as
Lab (short for Labourer?). In Cornwall William was a
Miner.
In 1870 they appear in the Nevada Census at Buena Vista
Township in Humbolt
County. Both are quartz miners. They are not
living in the same house.
John listed as Jno (transcribed as Jonathon) is aged 19 and
William (surname
transcribed as TUGORING) is aged 42.
I cannot find either William or John in the 1880
Census. The closest match
for William is a W TREGONNING aged 48 who lived at Mineral
Hill, Eureka with
his wife S.
William however would have been aged about 54 and his wife
Elizabeth (d.
1884) and daughter Elizabeth Ann were alive and back home
in Cornwall.
Also at Mineral Hill is a John TREGONING aged 27 born
England and his wife
Mattie born MO. The marriage of J.H.TREGONNEY to
Mattie RICHARDSON took
place in Palisade, Eureka County in 1879. This is
possibly the same John
from the 1870 census but I am not aware of a middle
name. I have not been
able to find this couple in later census records for
Nevada.
According to records from the Cornwall Record Office in
Cornwall, England,
in 1882 administration of the estate of Nicholas TREGONING
was granted to
Henry JENKIN, Carpenter of St Agnes (Cornwall), the lawful
attorney of
William TREGONING one of the children of the deceased, now
residing at
Patford?, Eureka County, State of Nevada U.S.A.
The transcriber of the above record was unsure of the place
name however I
believe that the correct name is SAFFORD. According
to a book available on
Google entitled 'Romancing Nevada's Past: ghost towns and
historic sites of
Eureka, Lander, and White Pine Counties' in 1882 a William
TREGONING was the
proprietor of the Safford Restaurant (p.40).
I am not sure if I am reading this correctly but after the
heading SAFFORD
is (BARTH) (PINE MOUNTAIN) (PINE VALLEY). SAFFORD is
4 miles south of
Palisade along the poor road. According to this book the
town of Safford was
abandoned in mid 1883.
I am hoping that there is someone on this list who may be
able to help me
find out what happened to William and John TREGONING or who
can provide me
with some ideas for further research.
Any replies would be appreciated.
Regards,
Christine
