Hey there, I'm hoping to find more information on Lindsays I've traced down to the
Huntington Valley area in the late 1800's and early 1900's.
One is a Joseph Lindsey/Lindsay that I know lived in Nevada in the 1860's and, more
specifically, in Huntington Valley in the early 1900's. I have tracked down family of
mine in Huntington Valley and believe this Joseph is also a Joseph Lindsay ancestor of
mine.
Joseph Lindsay was born about Jun 1845 somewhere in Illinois. He married Sarah
"Sadie" Bowen (born 24 July 1850 in Wales) before 1872 Nevada. They had the
children Liew Leland Lindsay (30 Oct 1873 in Huntington Valley) and Pearl (Lindsay) Toyn
(7 Jul 1867).
Pearl was one of the first teachers in the Huntington Valley area and stayed as such for
many years.
Joseph was a civil war veteran and shows up on the 1890 Veteren's Schedule in Eureka
Co, Nevada.
There is also a Lindsay Creek that is nearby (dumps into Huntington Valley, if I'm not
mistaken) which is named after "Joseph Lindsay; an early settler." I have no
evidence, but I strongly believe this is the same Joseph. If anyone knows about this,
I'd be happy to know.
I am hoping to maybe find a local biography of Joseph or any more information about a
Joseph Lindsay in the area in the early 1900's. He appears to have died between 1900
and 1910, as his widow begins to collect his Civil War pension then.
Interestingly, enough, I've seen records where it appears that Sarah "Sadie"
Bowen had married a John Dave Lindsey/Lindsay before she married Joseph. He was also born
circa 1845 in Illinois, so this might be a mistake on the records (maybe it's supposed
to be Joseph), but it could also be another Lindsay ancestor of mine, my Joseph
Lindsay's brother John Lindsay. Sadie's husband was supposed to have died 27 Apr
1871 in Austin, Lander Co, Nevada. He and Sarah Bowen had the children Sarah Belle
(Lindsey/Lindsay) Bryant-Skoggs (Jan 1867 in Austin, Lander Co, Nevada) and George
Washington Lindsey (21 Jan 1868 in Austin, Lander Co, Nevada). I'm not sure what to
make of this, but if I could find any further information on him, I might be able to rule
him out or not.
Lastly, I have managed to track down a great great great great great uncle of mine in
Huntington Valley on censuses named David Lindsay (the reasone I'm looking into these
other Lindsays), and I have also found reference to a David Lindsay being one of the
earliest postmasters of Huntington Valley. Again, hoping to find maybe a short bio or
other references in a local resource. He married a woman named Permilla
"Minnie" from Ohio and had three children, two of which lived to adulthood:
Newton Clyde (went by Clyde) Lindsay (born 1871 in Ohio died 1937 in Los Angeles,
California) and Ruby Nevada (Lindsay) Blant/Blank/Black (14 Mar 1847 in Nevada died 27 Jun
193-? In Elko Co, Nevada).
Thank you all for your time.
