Hi Maureen,
Thank you for your detailed response. I will take some time to digest its
contents.
I found a very good book online called Romancing Nevada's Past: Ghost Towns
and Historic Sites of Eureka, Lander and White Pine Counties, which includes
a reference to Safford and William Tregoning. Safford was 4 miles north of
Palisade. William ran a restaurant there in 1882 but it seems that the town
was soon deserted. There were actually two William Tregonnings in Eureka
(one family later went to Utah) but the town of Safford was mentioned in
relation to the estate of William's father in Cornwall so I believe that
this is one of the people that I am looking for.
I have since found a newspaper report concerning a John Tregonning from the
Reno Gazette 26 June 1884 edition which reads "Concentrating Ores at Pinto.
John Tregonning is concentrating ore from the Rescue mine, Silverado, at the
Pinto Mill. He is making a trial of a process by which he thinks any
quantity of lead ores can be made profitable. He is experimenting with a
lot of 25 tons and has so far been quite successful." Searching on Google I
see that Pinto is in White Pine so possibly John and his father may have
moved around depending on where the work was.
Regards,
Christine

Hello Christine,
I am looking at the digital records I know of for the area you are
researching.
I must tell you some information that maybe helpful. Humbolt, Eureka, Lander
and Elko County are in the same area of the state. Much of this part of the
state was mining and now those cities/towns are ghosttowns. I know more
about Elko County than the others, so my reference will be around Elko.
Palisade is on the boarder of Elko/Eureka County. I would say records could
be in either Eureka or Elko County. I have never heard of Safford so can't
help you on that place.
Here is a great resource for Elko County burials "T".
http://files.usgwarchives.net/nv/elko/cemeteries/elkocountyt.txt
Here is the Elko County index page for the site above that might help you
with further research:
http://usgwarchives.net/nv/elkoarc.htm
Then the main archives page for Nevada:
http://usgwarchives.net/nv/nvfiles.htm
I did not find the surname TREGONNING on the first website, but more time
might help.
I assume you have been to the Elko County page that I developed. There are
some resources there:
http://www.rootsweb.ancestry.com/~nvelko/
I think Northeastern Nevada Museum is very helpful:
1515 Idaho Street
Elko, NV 89801
775-738-3418
http://www.museumelko.org/
Otherwise, the birth, death, marriage records for the state of Nevada are
held in archives in Carson City. Here is their website. I notice they
recommend Vitalcheck for faster service. I think they are pricey and you
will be required to prove lineage through VitalChek anyway. I'd try this
site through the State of Nevada as they have helped me in the past with my
family:
http://health.nv.gov/vs.htm
Hope this helps you. I will continue to look at other sources to see if I
can help you more. I live 13 hours from the area, so can't do an onsite
investigation. Old papers are kept at the Elko County Library on microfish,
but someone would have to volunteer to help you on site. The Elko County
Library is on the Elko County website above. There might be a person who
would help for a fee.
Good luck and happy hunting,

Quoting Christine Tregonning <CJTregonning(a)xtra.co.nz>:
Hello,
I have been trying to find one of my ancestor's brothers, William
TREGONING or TREGONING who is supposed to have gone to Nevada possibly
with his son John about 1866. I have possibly located them in the
1870 census in Humbolt County. In the 1880 census there is a John
TREGONING living with his wife Mattie at Mineral Hill in Eureka while
in 1882 a William TREGONNING ran a restaurant in a place called Safford
which is
also in Eureka.
John TREGONNING and Mattie RICHARDSON were married at Palisade but the
county on record was Elko ( I am presuming that Elko was closer than
wherever the marriage would have been recorded in Eureka) and while
some records have been digitised and appear on the Familysearch
website the records for this county appear to be missing. I have
checked the available records for Eureka and I can't find any trace of
them nor do they appear in the 1910 census from what I can tell
although the surname is often spelt incorrectly or mis-transcribed.
While the marriage information must exist I am wondering whether there
are any birth or death records for this county and if so how one would
go about accessing them. As I am from New Zealand it is not possible
for me to view any records in person so any assistance in this respect
would be appreciated.
Regards,
Christine
